Transmission fluid on 5 speed and MGW shifter????

Hey guys, just a couple of questions.. Ive read that whenever you install an MGW shifter you replace the transmission fluid..
-Why do you need to replace the transmission fluid at that time?
- What kind of transmission fluid should I use, same as automatic??
-Also, most important, is changing the 5 speed transmission fluid a scheduled maintenance and how often should I do it? (ive never read this on a scheduled maint for a 5 speed, only for automatics)

thanks

Its not required to change tranny fluid...but most people do because its easy to do with the shifter out, you just pour it straight in rather than pumping it in thru the fill hole. I didn't do mine..have 25k miles...probably shoulda but couldn't resist getting that MGW on.

It is recommended to change it, not sure how many miles...and most seem to recommend the Royal Purple tranny fluid, I imagine its just manual tranny fluid...but someone else will chime in I'm sure.

Good luck with it, and enjoy, mine just went on a week ago and I love it...still getting used to the extra nosie (more whining from the tranny, especially at high RPM's). Oh and be careful with that RTV...I used a bunch...and am afraid it seeped into the tranny as well as seeping out as I tightened it up, but I'm thinking its too sticky to actually drip off into the tranny.

thanks guys..

Does anyone knows when is the scheduled time to change the tranny oil in the 5 speed?

I think that on ford.com the scheduled time to change the automatic transmission oil is at 150k, but doesnt say anything about the 5 speed..

Im sure someone will correct me if im wrong but I believe manual transmissions dont actualy need fluid changes unless you suspect contamination, maybe 1 or 2 over the life of the car because unlike auto transmissions a manual does not put the fluid under pressure or heat it to very high temps....a manual is like a cars rearend, just gears spinning in some fluid...

I did my MGW and Royal Purple fluid the day after xmas. I only had 9K miles, but figured I'd change it out since I heard how easy it was filling through the shifter versus the fill hole. I got 4 quarts of royal purple synchromax on ebay for 38.xx shipped.

Also, I changed to Royal Purple because there are claims out there regarding more hp. I figured synthetic in the motor, in the transmission, and in rear when gears are put in might add up to a few ponies. Everything helps.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the gearbox will get contamination from metal shavings and whatnot well within 50k-60k.
