transmission guys, no speedo

The cable/jacket is good. the gage is good/new. Upon hooking up the new cable, a gear and possibily other things attached to the toothed gear fell inside the tranny. (No foriegn objects entered the transmission.) This happened back in 2000 when the car was bought. No noise etc from the tranny but the problem happens to keep the speedo from working.

Does anyone know what pieces could of fell into the trans?
Can these pieces be removed and replaced without opening the transmission?

Yea, i've had that one happen before. The gear inside the tranny is held into place by a little clip that holds it to the mainshaft. I was driving one day and my speedo quit working. Upon removing the gear from the side of the transmission that the cable was attached to, i stuck my finger up into the cavity in the transmission and couldn't feel the other gear. Once I got the tranny out i had found that the clip gave out and allowed the gear to slip back on the mainshaft. No biggie, cause the gear will just go for a ride with no problem. The problem is that the clip can drop into the bottom of the case, and possibly work forward and get caught up in the 5th gear assembly. Although I think there is a step in the case to prevent such things from making it forward.

Thanks 85 coupe for the info. just what i was looking for. Im not worried about it hurting the tranny. Its been in there since 2000 and hasnt seemed to bother anything.
Now how can i fix it? Does the tranny need to be opened up? If so, how far in? Something I can do? Or bring it to a shop.

Take the one bolt holding the cable to the tranny housing, take out cable, put on new driven gear (have to determine what was the common tooth count for that year and gear ratio, put on new retainer clip to hold the driven gear on the cable, put it back in and bolt it back up.

It's more difficult than it sounds

85coupe - had exactly the same thing happen to mind. However, the clip definitely CAN make it to the front of the tranny. Because I fished mine out of the fluid drain hole with a wand-magnet. Luckily it didn't get pulled up into any tight spot where it might have done damage. I had to pull the tail shaft housing off, replace the drive gear and clip, as well as the driven gear on the cable.

Yep it can be scarry if that metal clip decides to work its way up into the teeth or some other part of the tranny in mesh.

I know you don't want to hear this, but as other people have posted, you will have to remove the tranny to fix this one.

And then, after the tranny is removed, you have to remove the shifter and tailhousing and possibly the top cover lid, all which involve some basic mechanical knowledge, but nothing too complicated.

WOW, that's scary Michael, as making it that far up front is amazing, especially since the drain hole leading from the tailhousing passes directly beside the 5 drive gear, wow.

I drove for about 2 miles with mine running around in there, i was really hot when i found out what had happened, as I needed the car the next day and it happened at 5 in the afternoon, so a 12 pack and 5 hrs later she was back together.

87 stang, it sounds like you are talking about the speedo driven gear, the part we are referring to is the drive gear, located in the tranny on the output shaft.

Yeah - I was shocked too. Was my first time inside a T-5; when I got the tail shaft housing off and looked at the size of the passages from front to rear I thought 'there's no way it could've made it up front'. But I was wrong. I drove mine something on the order of 500 miles with it that way. I didn't have any idea the clip had come completely off.

Yeah I said the driven gear. But if you are talking about the drive gear then that sucks even worse. So yes, you will have to take off the tailhousing but that is all. It's hard as hell to do so but if you remove the driveshaft and drain the fluid, you may be able to take off the tailhousing with the tranny still installed. In the end however, you need to fins the clip for which ever one broke and fell off, the plastic can keep going for a ride for all I care

There is some evidence out there that ground up or small bits of plastic teeth don't do the bearings in the tranny any favors; seems reasonable.

thanks everyone for the post. your inputs are greatly appreciated. I guess its time to break it open. while its out seems to be a great time to put in the clutch i've been wanting. anyway thanks everyone.
