I got the trans in and rotating with out any problem!!!!! but now when I install the starter it starts to bind. When I turn the motor over manually or with the starter you hear a thud. I could see some small scaring on the starter. So I took the grinder to that small area but the problem still is there. I have a 67 with a 302 and the trans is from a 71 mustang (C-4). I was wondering is there any difference between a starter from the 71 to the 67? any help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

Where is the scarring exactly ? Is the bendix retracting all the way ? There are no differences. 12sec67 was running a late model starter for the longest time in his 67.

Maybe double check that it is the starter you asked for. The parts store gave me one that woud fit onto the transsmission but the angle of the...i dont know what you call it...the webing? (the aluminum webs up by the tip of the starter) casued it to bind on the teeth of the flywheel.

I think this may be what you are describing.
