I changed out my clutch. I struggled for a while trying to get my tranny all the way in. It was about a 1/4" shy of bellhousing. i figured 1/4", the shaft would have been somewhat in the pilot bearing. So I tightened the four bolts evenly around, went up easily with no problem. I am now reading threads that say never tighen bolts to pull the two together. But, that only refered to a 1/2" gap between the bellhousing and tranny. I would think 1/2" would mean the shaft isnt in the pilot bearing. Did I screw up or should just I just try it. I don't want to pull it all back apart.

I would definitly pull it back out you never wanna pull the trans to the bell housing together with just the bolts it should fit flush before you tighten anything. If not you may end up damaging the input shaft on the trans.

Thanks, I will do that. I will have someone press the clutch pedal, maybe that will help it slide in better. I hope nothing is damged already. As far as I got was sliding it in and tightened. Did not go any further. I should be able to check the pilot bearing with pulling the bell housing again.

When you go to install it leave the trans in gear and have someone turn the output shaft by hand to try and line the splines up when putting it in, it should just slide right in.

Im gonna try pressing the clutch and see how freely the shaft rolls before pulling the tranny back out. I know the splines lined up, just worried about the pilot bearing.

Make sure it's in gear and mess with the output shaft while pushing on the trans. You'll be able to walk the trans in once it's far enough by having someone push the clutch while you apply pressure, and then hold it as they release, and repeat. Good luck!

Honestly...and believe me, I'm sick and damn tired of pulling transmissions...I would pull the trans and make sure you didn't bugger the hell out of the splines on either the input shaft or the clutch hub. Drawing the trans tight with the bolts is a no-no.

The clutch and input splines are pretty meaty. If you push the clutch and it moves in and out freely you are probably ok there, but you can't see the pilot bearing unless you pull the trans. It is probably what you were hung on and if it is a roller you could very well have damaged it. If those rollers come out of the race and work on the end of the input shaft it is ugly. I saw one come apart once. I used bushings for years after that because I didn't want it to happen to me. I'm finally back to rollers.

Well I only snugged it up when there was a 1/4" gap. I figured just a 1/4" , it had to alteast made it thru clutch and a little in the pilot bearing. I will pull it back out, just to be safe. Just gonna try without taking the hpipe back off.

Cutting corners will most likely end up wasting more time.. Gonna be pretty hard to pull the trans with the h pipe attached.. Unless maybe you leave the bellhousing on.

H-pipe has to come out to drop the trans crossmember anyway

Agreed you might as well do it right pull the exhaust down to give yourself enough room to inspect and reinstall it properly instead of fighting it.
