Transmission kickdown

I have a 02 GT that sometimes doesn't kickdown far enough when I think it should. What controls the kickdown points in our automatic transmissions? Trans pressure ?
Can someone explain how it works.

it electronically controlled if it senses the need to downshift it will otherwise it will stay in the current gear....

I did a complete flush about a month ago, the trans fluid wasn't burnt it smelled fine and color was good. Sometimes my trans doesn't down shift to the lower gear when it will other times at the same speeds. Is something going out ???

I also have a tranny cooler that has been sitting in my garage for a month that I have not installed yet. I know I need to install it, work has been really busy.

it all depends on the load, if it senses it needs to downshift it will otherwise it wont

Do you have gears? If not get 4.10s and a tuner and itll be like a whole new car.

Need more info like how fast your going and what gear it drops to when you put the pedal to the metal?

I also have an 02GT Auto basically stock and using a Predator to adjust the trans. If I'm going about 25mph in Drive (OD off) and punch it, it's kinda scary cuz it drops to 1st and will break traction with stock 3.27s.

the shift points are determined by mph and throttle position.

you can adjust them with handheld tuners.
