transmission oil

your mechanic must be an old school guy. You got to remember back in the day, Parts moved slower and fit looser and heat was a problem. A thicker oil was usually best in everything if you were going to race.
That's why most of the old school guys are always wanting to thicken up the lubricating oil. Some of those old guys are good mechanics but they just never got over the fact that today's stuff works faster and has tighter tolerances and a thinner oil is needed.

I know I'm and old school guy myself but I have learned to listen to what some of the sharp young guys have to say and adapt

Question: Why is ATF better than MTF for a 5 speed?

Because the T-5 has some tight clearances and fluid needs to flow rather easily to reach some of the inner roller bearings under the gears. Everything is splash lubricated, so the transmission is designed in such a way that requires ATF for proper lubrication.

Motor oil tends to be rather thick, especially on cold mornings. If you've ever done an oil change in sub-20 degree temps after leaving the oil outdoors, you'd know exactly what I mean.

Potential results could be a whining transmission as bearings overheat and begin to score the shafts

There is no such thing as "Manual transmission fluid"

Automatic trans fluid is not really just for automatics. Many manual transmissions use it, as well as using it in power steering.

Other fluids manuals can use are motor oil or gear oil.

All depends on the trans design. But the T-5 is designed to use ATF

This is what I bought not too long ago for my car. But if ATF is better, I'll be switching to it once I get the engine and trans out this coming week. WOOOO SPRING BREAK!
