I've only had my 65 coupe for a few weeks now. I've noticed that when I shift into drive or reverse the car lurches in that direction. It does this primarily if it's been sitting for a while--like over night. Is this a common thing or might there be a problem with my transmission. The owner actual had the trans rebuilt about a year ago.

Could be a tranny problem but first, what is your idle speed? If it is set too high the car will jump as goes into gear.

What engine, transmission? With mine the car does the same thing in the morning (more of a slamming in reverse) because of slop in the rearend. If I put in drive momentarily before reverse it isn't near as bad. It's just that the heavy gear oil isn't coating everything after its been parked and the helix of the pinnion is, by design, more agressive in reverse. For me, it's just that first intial shift in the morning that's a little abrupt.

The ford rearends have damn near 1/4 turn of slop.

The car is a 289 V8 with a Edelbrock 600. One of the previous owners attempted to "race" the car so it idles high. Not sure how to determine speeed...maybe you can help me with that (Dave)

Krash...my experience is similiar to what you're talking about--first run of the day.

ok, i had the same problem.. you need to obtain a tachometer if you dont have one. set your idle speed while its in drive (have someone help you ) i have mine set low around 700 rpm's while in drive just so i can hear the cam and exhaust rumble in its sweet spot while idleing. whats happening is your torque converter is engaging because the idle is so high and it is basically trying to pull the car either way... then you have to really hold the brakes, which is just fighting against the engine. mine was so bad that when i went to stop, i could feel the engine pulling the car when i applied the brakes, and thats a no no. if u have any more questions, feel free to ask. by the way, u set the idle speed with the idle adjustment screw. u really need a tach to do it correctly, but u can do it by ear with some experience

All the healthy Ford rear ends I've had, and even the well used ones never had more than 1/4 of an inch, let alone a quarter turn. That is way, way excessive.

I too would check the idle speed. If that is alright, then see how much differential slop you have.

Make absolutely sure the car cannot roll, crawl under there and try to rotate the driveshaft while the trans is in neutral.
