Transmission problems (again - not clutch)

Well, it's been about 4 weeks and ~5,000 miles since I've had my 5th and reverse gear replaced and now I have a whole new problem with my transmission.

I was on the interstate in 5th doing about 70-75 MPH and the car seemed to stumble a little. It felt like the car was dragging so I thought maybe I had a tire go down or caliper sticking. I pulled over and none of the tires were flat, engine sounded fine and didn't see any fluids leaking or cherry rotors.

I took off and got back on to the interstate and the car pulled like a madman but still didn't feel right. I got up next to the median wall and I could hear a crazy rubbing sound (like brake pads on rotors) but it was really loud. When I pushed the clutch in it went away. The sound didn't get worse or less with the RPM's it was constant.

I could smell transmission fluid in the cabin of the car and it got really bad above 75 MPH. It wasn't burnt though. It would still pull up hills in 5th gear with no slippage


Any ideas? Some people say possibly one of the seals, and very possible to be the front seal and sprayed fluid all over the clutch.

Turned out to be the pinion bearing exploded, draining all the fluid and ruining the rear end.

Wow...no wonder you had no suggestions posted. I had a pinion bearing go bad but I guess I caught it in time.

Yep. I replaced it with a junkyard model for $200 installed. I got a little mileage out of it until the clutch packs in the LSD started to go. I just went ahead and bought a whole brand new FRPP one with 3.73's in it for $700. I don't get how Ford wanted over $1,000 to rebuild this one when I can buy a brand new one for $700... Didn't make sense.

I need to add some friction modifier to it though because I had T/C on the other day and when going through certain turns at highway speed the T/C light would come on and try to cut power. I just put Mobil 1 LS fluid in it. It's not chirping or anything but I assume that the modifyer may be the issue.
