I have a 87 gt and i just replaced the clutch and the flywheel. Im still having problems with the trans. It was hard to get into fourth from third. It would grind. Now it grinds from second to third and third to fourth. I drained the fluid and replace with two quarts GM synchromesh trans fluid and topped it off with regular ATF. I think i have more problems. Can anyone tell me whats is going on?

T5's and synchromesh are not a match made in heaven. Get that stuff out of the gearbox asap.

He's right. T5's use ATF Dextron II according to the T5 service manual. Put the correct fluid and the correct amount of fluid before doing anything else.

The syncro problems are typical of a T5 that either needs the clutch adjustment checked or is in need of replacement of the syncros.

Do the clutch adjustment first before considering any other problems. With the stock plastic quadrant and cable, pull up on the clutch pedal until it comes upward toward you. It will make a ratcheting sound as the self adjuster works.

Clutch pedal adjustment with aftermarket quadrant and cable: I like to have the clutch completely disengaged and still have about 1.5” travel left before the pedal hits the floor. This means that I have only about 1” of free play at the top before the pedal starts to disengage the clutch. Keep in mind that these figures are all approximate. When properly adjusted, there will not be any slack in the clutch cable. You will have 4-15 lbs preload on the clutch cable.
