So I ended up taking out 2nd and 4th gears in my 1990 AOD 5.0 GT last night so I took it to the transmission shop first thing this morning. They checked it out and of course said it would need to be overhauled for $800 some dollars and $200 some for un-installing it, oil, parts and re-installing it. I figured it'd be around there but now I'm thinking while it's apart to have them throw in a 2500 stall convertor and a shift kit since the car has 2:73's and is pretty doggish off the line. I had them price it all out and for the overhaul, shift kit, top of the line stall convertor, parts and labor I'm lookin' at about $1700 What do you guys think about that idea, good or bad? going to be pretty quick when she's done?

I don't think you're going to find that you're much faster, but the shift kit is definately a good idea. The firmer shifts will be satisfying, and are better for the tranny.

The converter will give you better launches, but the 2.73s are hard to get any performance out of.

Save up for some 3.73s. You'll definately wake your car up then.

I took your advice about the rear end gears. So I added Ford Racing 3:73's to the 2500 stall convertor, shift kit, tranny overhaul and front and rear main seals parts list. Should be a tad quicker when all is said and done :D

Damn!! You're doing a lot at once!

I think you'll like it. You'll be noticibly quicker, and still have good driveability.

Don't forget the new speedo gear (23-tooth). Some shops forget to swap it out.

Your speedo will be quite a bit off (reading about 25% high) until you change it. Get one from Latemodel Restoration Supply, I think it's better than the Jeep gear most folks wind up getting. The speedo will still be off, but only by 5 or 6%. It's an easy DIY swap.

Something doesn't sound right to me...what exactly were you getting for $800? You should always do a convertor when you rebuild a tranny -- if they weren't planning that, then ehh.... A rebuild kit is about $200 for the soft parts, so with no upgrades they wanted $600 in just labor to just do the tranny, not including r+r or anything else? Sounds like alot to me anyway. The 2500 convertor and the shift kit being $700 is quite a bit too -- it better be something like an Edge Racing Convertor and a TransGo shift kit or something, not a B&M special.

I know when I had the tranny done in my F150 (also an AOD), it ended up being around $1500 all said and done. That's more work with the transfer case, etc. I had what I think is some good upgrades done, like band upgrade, A servo, shift kit, etc. as well as a new convertor.

Oh, if you don't already have one, a good external tranny cooler is a must.

To replace 2nd and 4th and overhaul the transmission is going to cost around $800. Parts, Labor and what not is going to be around $200. They have a higher shop rate than anyone else around but they specialize in Mustangs. I went with a top of the line stall convertor and a TransGo shift kit which is why that part of it is so high. I would throw $:10's in there but I'm going to be doing some highway driving and I don't want it wound up the whole time and a 2500 stall with 4:10's sound's like a lot of tire squealing when it comes race time.
