i have a 5-speed....can you fill your tranny fluid through where your shifter is? if you take all that off , there is the place where the shifter hooks into the tranny, can i fill it in there, or do i have to get under the car and put it in through that litte a$$ vertical fit hole?
thank you

Yes you can fill it from the shifter hole. Just removed the top "fill" plug from the trans and remove the shifter assembly. Fill it unitl it comes out ot that hole and then plug it up. Reinstall the shifter and your good to go. The fluid will take a little bit to drain down through the shifter hole so take it slow.

are you talking about that little itty bitty hole in the bottom of the fill place when you take the shifter off? there is supposed to be a cap in that? mine didnt have one..should it be plugged?

Here is the easy way. Go to autozone, and buy the funnel that has a plastic hose attached to it. Then, buy about 2 ft of rubber hose that will fit inside the plastic hose. Now you have a funnel which can reach the fill plug on the transmission.

Just remove the shift knob, then pop out plastic trim panel which has the vinal cover on it, then you can see the ground. Feed the hose through the hole on the right of the shifter, get underneath, and put about 2 inches of the hose inside the transmission fill plug.

Then get back in the car, and add ATF until it starts to pour out the fill plug. Then put the plug back, and you are done!!

Remember, our 5-speed manual transmissions take Dexron automatic transmission fluid, NOT gear fluid. If you doubt me, check your haynes manual, and it will tell you the same.

A drained T-5 will take almost 3 quarts.

You can fill through the shifter.

The itty-bitty hole in the shifter hole doesn't have a cap.

I've also used the funnel with a hose method filling from inside the car. Don't spill!

Make sure your car is level.

i do it a little different from you guys (but close to Scott's method). i have about 4' of clear tubing. stick a funnel on the end. drop the line down the pass side header. get under and stick it in the fill hole. then fill from up top. same idea - im a clutz and would spill gear oil in the car. :)

it worked well, i just jacked the car up, took out the fill plug, put it back down and filled from the inside, till it started coming out the fill hole...(i was right over the drain in my shop...don't worry) jacked the car back up and put the plug in, ready to rock out...

It's pretty cake if you have some friends on hand that know what they are doing.
1. remove the driveshaft
2. Place jack under tranny for support.
3. remove the cross member.
4. disconnect/remove any sensors and exhaust parts.
5. unbolt the tranny from bellhousing
6. unbolt/remove bell housing.
That's all I can think of right know it's a pretty straight foward remove and reinstall process.

i am in the middle of swapping the trannys....how in the world do you get that universal joint thing out, the thing that connects the tranny to the driveshaft? i took out the 4 c-type clamps but i cant seem to get the universal joint out...

Why not remove the whole thing. Remove the 4 bolts from the yolk from the rear end. Then slide the entire drive shaft out. You don't have the remove the bell house but I would just to look at how the clutch/flywheel look.

Bellhousing can stay.

Tip- when putting the tranny back in, you may need to have someone push the clutch in to get the tranny to fully seat in the bellhousing. This may be only needed if you removed the clutch.

stupid 12 mm bolts are tight as heck, i only have a 3/8ths drive with a 12 mm socket, but no 1/2 drive 12mm socket...the 3/8th drive ratchet cant handle the torque i put on it if i put a bar on the end...son of a...

Use a wrench with another wrench piggy backed on top of that open end to box end to get more leverage. It's much easier than trying to fit a socket wrench in there with the u-joint in the way.

oooo i like that idea....
let me go try, i got all of them out but one...its being a :taco: :notnice:
