i have a 5-speed....can you fill your tranny fluid through where your shifter is? if you take all that off , there is the place where the shifter hooks into the tranny, can i fill it in there, or do i have to get under the car and put it in through that litte a$$ vertical fit hole?
thank you

Yes you can fill it from the shifter hole. Just removed the top "fill" plug from the trans and remove the shifter assembly. Fill it unitl it comes out ot that hole and then plug it up. Reinstall the shifter and your good to go. The fluid will take a little bit to drain down through the shifter hole so take it slow.

Here is the easy way. Go to autozone, and buy the funnel that has a plastic hose attached to it. Then, buy about 2 ft of rubber hose that will fit inside the plastic hose. Now you have a funnel which can reach the fill plug on the transmission.

Just remove the shift knob, then pop out plastic trim panel which has the vinal cover on it, then you can see the ground. Feed the hose through the hole on the right of the shifter, get underneath, and put about 2 inches of the hose inside the transmission fill plug.

Then get back in the car, and add ATF until it starts to pour out the fill plug. Then put the plug back, and you are done!!

Remember, our 5-speed manual transmissions take Dexron automatic transmission fluid, NOT gear fluid. If you doubt me, check your haynes manual, and it will tell you the same.

A drained T-5 will take almost 3 quarts.

You can fill through the shifter.

The itty-bitty hole in the shifter hole doesn't have a cap.

I've also used the funnel with a hose method filling from inside the car. Don't spill!

Make sure your car is level.

2.8 quarts is what T-5's take to fill

That may be 100% correct, but I never go by recommended fluid levels. I always fill it to the bottom of the fill plug. Same with gear oil.

i do it a little different from you guys (but close to Scott's method). i have about 4' of clear tubing. stick a funnel on the end. drop the line down the pass side header. get under and stick it in the fill hole. then fill from up top. same idea - im a clutz and would spill gear oil in the car.

It's very simple and just in case place rags around the area to help catch any lost fluids.

It's pretty cake if you have some friends on hand that know what they are doing.
1. remove the driveshaft
2. Place jack under tranny for support.
3. remove the cross member.
4. disconnect/remove any sensors and exhaust parts.
5. unbolt the tranny from bellhousing
6. unbolt/remove bell housing.
That's all I can think of right know it's a pretty straight foward remove and reinstall process.

you actually have to remove the bell housing to just do a tranny swap? i thought that the clutch was in the bell housing...maybe i am wrong, maybe you have to take it off to get the tranny off...

Why not remove the whole thing. Remove the 4 bolts from the yolk from the rear end. Then slide the entire drive shaft out. You don't have the remove the bell house but I would just to look at how the clutch/flywheel look.

Bellhousing can stay.

Tip- when putting the tranny back in, you may need to have someone push the clutch in to get the tranny to fully seat in the bellhousing. This may be only needed if you removed the clutch.

Use a wrench with another wrench piggy backed on top of that open end to box end to get more leverage. It's much easier than trying to fit a socket wrench in there with the u-joint in the way.
