this is not the only thing that will cause a whine, but it is a sure fire way to detect or eliminate the possibility of this bearing being bad. hope this helps

You can replace the bearings and it may solve the problem, but usually by the time they are whining the input shaft has been damaged also. There is no removable race. Mine whined really loud when I got the car....the guy that had it before me ran it around like that for a long time.......worked fine, just made alot of noise. I tore it apart and replaced the bearings, spacers and the input shaft. Everything is now in specs, shaft play is dead on and it still whines a little bit, so I give up on mine..............I'm goin auto, the 393 would have trashed the T5 anyway.
