tremic VS. G-force

I will be looking in to a new tranny very soon due to a messed up 3rd gear so far. Ive hear a little for G-force. Ant tips or advice on what to run. I like others love to pound the **** out of my car. I have about 1800.00 to work with. What about the T-56?

As far as the Gforce goes, its going to be cheaper for you to swap the trany into your car, because it's basically a beefed up T5, meaning you won't need a new bell housing/clutch assymbly, whereas you WILL need those things for the Tremec. As far as 1800 to spend, i put my 3550 into my car for just a hair under 2k, but i had to buy EVERYTHING from the motor to the driveshaft, including clutch cable and clutch quadrant, so if you've already got a 5 speed yours should be a bit cheaper.

I beat the piss out of my car, but i never miss gears...which is a big part of busting gears. As for the Gforce, i would have loved to get one but they were out of my price range, although i hear that they're stout as hell. And as for the T56, i would have sold my left nut to get one but nobody was buying that month. I've heard you need to do a lot of modding to get one into your car but i'm not sure about the details on that one, sorry.

Wrong info 85SS, the new Tremec 500 will bolt right in. All you have to do is knock the tack welds on your crossmember and slide it back farther to the rear of the car and swap out the slip yoke because the 500 and 600 are 31 spline in the rear. The new trannys have the same bolt pattern, the 500 uses the same 10 spline shaft, and you can reuse your old bell and clutch. Its best to change the clutch while you are in there though. Also, the new Tremecs come with a beefy performance shifter. $1600 and your ready to go. It will handle more torque then you'll probably ever make, and you get to keep your old T5 so you can rebuild it or sell it to someone. If you do the G-Force you have to send them your tranny or pay more for one of their housings.

I just looked at the G-force site and they really arent that great. They handle the same amount of torque as the Tremec 500 so its not that racey. Also, it keeps saying that their kit comes with a 26 spline input shaft so you cant just bolt it in. Plus you have to pay shipping both ways. So, by the time you have them build a tranny thats just as strong as a Tremec its going to cost as much or more, and be just as difficult to install. If you want the TKO600 with the 26 spline input shaft it is $1680 shipped to your door. Add $200-300 for a new 26 spline clutch and you have a new clutch and TKO600 rated to 600 ft-lbs. If your clutch is fairly fresh, you can actually just change the disc and not the pressure plate and save about 50%. You could easily install a TKO600 with clutch for under $1800!

Just to show you how expensive the G-Force is:
For the 600 hp/500 ft-lb rated T-5 you have to have the 26 spline input shaft and upgraded mainshaft kit.
Thats $1095 for the gear/sychro set, $295 for the cheapest shaft upgrade kit, $250 for the labor, plus any small parts and rebuild kit which they dont list the price, and shipping to and from G-force. As you can see, thats around $1800-1900 and you still have to get a clutch. And its still not rated as high as the TKO600. I couldnt see why anyone would ever buy a G-Force T-5.

Smock, what tremec experience do you have? j/k. The new tko 500 and 600 can reuse a stock T5 bell? Fyi, the tko 500 can be had with a 26 spline input shaft for like $30 more.

The T-56 is a nice piece, but its not needed. Its more of a bragging rights piece. Not only that, but it weighs a fair amount more than a 5-speed. The cost to install one into your car would be $2700 for a standard T56 rated at 440 ft/lbs or $3172 for a Viper T56 rated at 550 ft/lbs. As for can see, its extremely expensive, and yet it holds less power than a TKO600. These are new costs of course, but you'd be hard pressed to find one that would bolt to a 5.0 since the bell is integral to the tranny. All stock T-56s bolt to Vipers, LS1's or modulars.

ok, I put in a king cobra, and bought a new cable from Steeda. I rather do the easiest install for the buck. Although I want it to hold up. I havent been on a dyno but its a 347 na. So.. a TKO 500 is a direct bolt in? I will in the next year be buying 31 axles and a new carrier, but for now I know that I will be needed a tranny, sorry but lamans terms on trannys.

If you look at your crossmember, on each end you'll see where it could slide back and forth where it mounts to each side of the car. You'll see it is just tackwelded on the sliders, not sure what they are called. You'll have to knock those out and slide the crossmember rearward. You'll also have to get a 31 spline yoke and have it installed onto your driveshaft. That's all you have to do to bolt it in. Go to DDperformance.com and get it from them for the cheapest price. You can also call them and they will explain to you exactly what it will take.

I thought the big thing with the G-Force is weight, espically rotating weight. IT's supposed to be alot less which=more power to the ground. From what I've heard the shifter that come with the Tremec aren't that good. I will be putting in the TKO w/Pro 5.0 shifter next week if everything goes right (was supposed to be this weekend but issues as usual). As for the crossmember deal, a 5 speed crossmember will be centered on the end tubes, on the auto ones they are all the way back (towards the rear end). Laurelmountainmustang sells new ones for $40 that slide. Then once you get them in there you can either weld them or just leave them. I haven't heard of any issues of people not welding these after install.

SmockDoiley,

Thanks for that correction....i'm not up to date on the current Tremec lineup, only the one i bought. Now that you mention it, i remember that whole thing about the 500 too.

I debated this same issue over the past few months. I ended up getting a TKO-600. The costs between the two comparable models were real close and I decided on the Tremec because they're reputable and have been around quite a while, plus the casing is new compared to your/someone elses used one.

Bragging rights? I'm tired of rebuilding my TKO (teeth shearing off 3rd gear). The T56 will outlast the TKO any day. Contact Hennessey Performance...they run a 600-1000 rwhp throught the viper spec T56 all day long...the TKO couldn't come close. I'm only running 560hp and 550lb-ft to the tires and the TKO is garbage...it shifts like crap too (very notchy). If you have the coin and you're going to run some decent power, go for the T56...my opinion. I was not happy with the TKO from soup to nuts.

The T56 is only 10lbs heavier. The only advantage the TKO600 has over the 2nd generation TKO is a one piece 3rd/4th gear cluster (got rid of the woodruff key design) and a different 1st gear to give it a higher torque rating.
