Since I bought my car it has had Steeda's Tri-Ax shifter in it. I have never really checked it out, just know it's there from pulling the plastic housing for the boot to fix the cigarette lighter. Lately the shifter has been feeling very sloppy and going for gears is a little more difficult because of how loose it feels. I've noticed in neutral the shifter rocks back and forth a bit more then it used to before you actually start tugging on the linkage. It just sort of flops back and forth about a good inch or so. Anyway due to this I'm getting choppy gear changes when I shift quickly, is there a bushing of some sort or something that could wear out over time and make my shifter loosen up? Or anything for that matter that would make the shifter have more play in it?

Obvious question, have you tightened the handle bolts?

Lol hey it's a good one and yes the bolts are tight, that's why I'm thinking it has to do with something further down from the handle. No one else has any input on this?

Take the shifter off and fully check it out, make sure everything is tight. If it is, then most likely you have to look at the tranny.

I think there is supposed to be a small (black) plastic sleeve over the metal ball end of the shifter, that extends down into the tranny. Maybe that has cracked or is broken or missing.

Most shifters loosen up over time. Both of my Tri-Axes did. MGW does not. I beat the crap out of mine and it's still rock-solid.
