Ok I have a 2001 GT and I stopped by DMP yesterday and picked up a Tri-ax for a weekend project. Following the instructions in the box I got the stock shifter out with no problem. However, when I try and set the Tri-ax in it will not sit flush on the case, there is a quarter inch gap or so between the shifter and the housing. I got to looking at the old one and the tri-ax and noticed the shaft on the triax seems to be longer than the stock one. I know I ust be missing something easy but could someone point it out for me.

do you have the right shifter? They changed transmissions in 2001 that could be your problem

Decode the sticker on the driver's side door post here ---->http://web.tampabay.rr.com/theflock/mustang/doorplate.html
Sounds like what sabrooks said, wrong shifter.

I think so, they looked up which one I was supposed to need when I went in. And the instructions say T5, T45, TR3650. From looking at the pics I would say there is a 3650 in the car.

Ok I checked the door sticker and now I'm really confused. It doesnt really match the one in the decoding link above. The 5 digit code is 1ze2g with T05 under it. Anyway I took a picture of the shift housing, which is fuzzy but maybe good enough to tell, and my door sticker.

did you take the plastic piece off the old shifter and put it on the new one? Also, make sure you are lining up the shaft (I said shaft) and the hole in the top of the tranny

you've probably got the T-45 shifter

The conclusion I have come to, from looking at the pictures in the instructions is that I have a 3650. However the box is labeled as being for the T5/t45, which is what the salesman at Dallas Mustang thought I had as well. Anyway I am just going to take it back after I get off work monday and take it back over to DM. I put the old one back on except for the leather boot and packed the sockets in the trunk so we can take it off there if they need to look at it.

Thanx for your suggestions

lol the sticker on ur door says you have a 3650....you just aren't reading it correctly i think. it isnt in the 5 digit code. look for the letters TR. underneath is the letter K. read the link posted above and it states what the K stands for.

Oh now i see, I thought the 5 digit code said the transmission. The example has a 5 digit code under TR so thats what i was lookin for, 5 digits together not 1 then a blank and 4 more. doh!

You have a T3650 Trans, I'm 100% sure of it. For one, half the 01's made came with them, and secondly, I just had my 99 [equipped with a T45] open 2 weeks ago to install mine and it looked nothing like the pic you posted. You definetly have a T3650. If your shifter isnt fitting perfectly, they had to have given you a shifter for a T45. Take it back and get the correct one and you'll be golden

Damn, OK, well I'm glad you guys finally figured it out. I was the one who had provided the link to the VIN/VCL decoding webpage. I was like, come on guys, I gave you the info up there!!!!
Anyway, the quick and dirty for anyone else - under the TR on the VCL (Vehicle Certification Label on the driver's side post), a "6" denotes a T-45, a "K" denotes a TR-3650. That salesman really should have known to ask you and been able to tell you how to find out what you have. This is Dallas Mustang, specializing in Mustangs?!?! Shame on them!

Heh thats what i get for assuming he knew more than I did lol. He asked if I knew and I told em I had no idea but it was parked outside if we needed to go find out. He went with whatever the computer said DOH! Partially my fault too cause I should have done a little more research first but I didnt.
