TRI-AX PROBLEM!

hey guys i just got a new tri ax for my 02gt and its WICKED stiff... like i have a hard time finding 5th and reverse, it also looked like on the inner part of the shifter it was scraping and making metal flakes.

it seemed the tighter i put the shifter in (in regards to the 4 bolts) the harder it is to shift

in that case is it safe to loosen up the shifter a bit more to get it to shift easier because its real stiff right now (1-4 stiff but ok 5 and R impossible)
^there not all that tight right now.

or do those bolts on the top of the shifter have anything to do with it.

I don't know about the metal flakes. Mine was VERY hard when I first got it and 5th and R was difficult to put it in those gears. After time it either loosened or I got used to it. I'm not sure about the tighter the bolts thing. I just torqued mine down to a comfortable level.

sell it. MGW. it was a lil stiff for 3 days, now i dont even notice it because of how smooth it is.

The bolts on top of the shifter are for safeguarding the transmission from overly aggressive shifts by you. If you are having difficulty finding a gear when you are not even moving in the vehicle, you might have the stop bolts out too far.

The four mounting bolts where the shifter base meets the transmission linkage have nothing to do with shifting ease, unless you purchased the wrong shifter for the car.

Yeah...you sure you got the right one? Seems obvious, but it should be a little stiff...not extremely hard to get in any gear. Doesn't sound right to me.

yeah i got the 3650 for a 02 gt... its def harder than it should be to find r and 5th and like i said as i tightened and loosened the bolts from the shifter to the trans it made a difference in the ease of the shift... looser=easier... i just didnt want to leave it too loose to where **** was jiggiling around.

any advice????? should i loosen it more

i also put the plastic end from the old shifter on the new one (where it meets inside the trans)... i was suposed to do that right?

You loosened the mounting bolts and it's not leaking???

the 4 bolts that puts the shifter to the trans... i dont have them super tight (when i did that i could barley move the shifter into any gear) so i loosened them, its still a tight fit on the gasket i bought but its not overly tight, i just wnat to know if i should loosen it even more... im thinkin yea because somethin def isnt right

It should loosen up quite a bit. I've got the Tri-Ax in my car and compared to the MGW in my roommate's car the Steeda is 10000000 times looser and easier to shift, imo.

But, if it doesnt get easier to shift then contact steeda and see if they can send you a replacement..

Yeah I dont think I would loosen the top four mounting bolts. If that is what is necessary then something is wrong. I had a Tri Ax in my 96 Cobra and I didnt encounter any kind of problems like you are having. Like mentioned above the positive stops could be your problem, but if you have already tried that then I would send it back. If you loosen the four mounting bolts you run the possiblity of getting everything out of alignment and you could mess things up in your tranny, shift forks ect... Also from personal experiance I wouldnt buy another Tri Ax, I didnt have any problems like you are having, but I wasnt overly impressed with it. I would get an MGW, thats what I am going to do when my current shifter wears out. My .02

yeah, i'd take it out. nothing about that seems right. Maybe you have it in backwards?

na def not in backwards... i think maybe im just used to it being smoother... im gonna let it ride for a week and see if it loosens up, ive heard from a bunch of people there real stiff at first.

That is fine, but tighten those 4 bolts down to the tranny...they should not be loose. As long as you are getting in gear and don't have any grinding going on you shouldn't hurt anything. Shouldn't have any metal flakes either whatever that was about. Yes, you are supposed to leave the little plastic piece in there where the shifter sits down in the tranny.
