Trip Meter resets at 4.5 to 5.2 miles!

I've got the strangest problem with the trip meter. I go to the gas station, fill up, and then reset the trip meter to zero. I drive home and park it over night. The distance from the gas station to my house is 4.9 miles.

The next morning when I get in and fire it up the trip meter reads zero again.

The trip meter only resets after it records a distance of 4.5 to 5.2 miles and then sets over night. The TM (trip meter) only resets once per tank.

If I go to a different gas station that is either closer to my home or farther (than the specifed distance above) then the trip meter doesn't reset.

My dealer replaced the message center unit. They wanted to replace the switch cluster that controls this unit. I told them "no". I couldn't see how the switch cluster would have much to do with a problem that was dependent on a specific number of miles traveled.

The dealer did reflash the ECU and that didn't cure the problem ( I think I remember the problem going away for one tank fill after the dealer reflash, BUT it occured again on the next fill and there after).

I think the problem exist in the ECU...... But, that's just a guess.

I am sorry to hear that many of you are having this very strange problem also. BUT it is nice to know that I was going nuts! For the longest time I thought that I was inadvertantly hitting the reset button! I was even thinking about putting a piece of masking tape over it to make sure that I wasn't absent mindedly hitting the crazy thing!

I'm going to print this thread and show him that I'm not making this problem up!

AND ...... yes, I too, just hate for them to touch my car!
