Transmission Help

Hi, My 1996 GT has 86,000 miles and when I try to quickly shift into second it grinds. No other gear does this, and the 1-2 shift is fine whe I shift slowly. What is wrong with it? It is becoming embarassing when I am with friends and I gun it in first then grind into second. How can I prevent this. I consider myself a decent driver, I have had 3 manual transmission cars and never had this problem before. Any help would be appreciated.

i had this same problem once..and fo rme it was just a worn out synchronizer. the transmission shop said it was from the clutch not being completely disengaged when the shift was taking place. i dont know if it would be what your problem is but it sounds the same as my tranny.

I grind second more than I care to remember. Could be a bad syncro but could also be you are letting off the clutch too soon. I find these trannies are less forgiving than earlier versions.

Mine was doing the same thing, it would grind whenever I would shift at high rpms. try changing the transmission fluid to a high quality synthetic. thats what I did and after awhile it went away

I went out and drove the car today, and the grinding only happens when I am running WOT in first then shift to second. If I shift slow enough I can shift at 5000rpm, but when I try to quickly shift it will grind. I am sure that the clutch is completely depressed so it isnt that I am trying to shift before the clutch is in. I will probably change the transmission fluid tommorrow, any other ideas?
