I helped a friend change his oil in his 92 Ram yesterday and after he had all the oil drained out he put the magnet end of a magnetic pick-up into the oil in the drain pan. He swirled it around and pulled it out and the magnet had like an ounce of metal shavings stuck to it. I thought it was pretty funny and he didn't really care because it's his off road beater which he gives hell all the time. I think I might try the same thing next time I change my oil or tranny fluid just to see how much of the engine or gear teeth are pouring out the drain hole.

You could try putting in a magnetic plug.

I'm using a magnet on my oil filter. I'll be using one soon on my gas filter as well. I can say for certain, these things actually work. The bigger and stronger, the better.

well i f it happens to everyones car and its normal wear, then i guess that it cant be helped so why bother. you could see if there could be a potential problem though if it was a lot of metal so i guess that could be good.

I did that once, but I did it in my differential (I was gonna say rear-end, but I could already hear the flames) before I had all the fluid out of the bottom and I found a dime sized chunk of metal. Turned out it was part of a ring gear tooth, supposedly it didn't want to be part of the gear anymore, I also found the top 2/3 of a ring gear bolt (this is in a stock rear end that's never been torn apart!). I do it now just to keep from getting metal splinters in my fingers.

I use a pretty powerful magnet right by the drain plug, and pull it off before draining so that anything gathered has a chance to get washed out a little 2 dollor piece is wll worth it to trap unwanted crap getting cycled/tossed through the engine.
