Trying to identify the rear end in my 83 mustang. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

That's an 8.8. The 7.5's are a little more "squished" top to bottom

I *think* the date code says "7B12" which translates to Feb 12th, 1987 OR Feb 12th, 1997. It could be either date since the year is only displayed as one digit. If it had drums on it, i'd say it's a 1987 rear

Yeah it has drums on the back of it. I also read somewhere it has 88 in the serial number, is that correct?

Looks like an 8.8 to me. Can you clean off the rest of the tag and get a super clear flat pic? We could tell what gears came in it from that.

It will say 88 on the tag, which I think I see. It will also say the gear ratio, like 2L73, 3L08, or 3L27 for the three factory gear ratios available in the 80's.

I'd say that rear came out of an 1987 Mustang v8

Yeah I store it out at my dads in his garage and I’ll crawl under it Wednesday and see if I can get the rest cleaned up.

Not that I know of, the garage was pretty damp during the winter, could that have caused it?

201A = 1986 Capri/1986-93 Mustang, 2.73:1, 8.8", 28-spline, locking
2SL73 = 2.73:1 axle ratio, Traction-Lok (limited slip) differential
A
88 = 8.8" ring gear diameter
7B12 = built on February 12, 1987
