I would like a few replies to a couple of simple Questions

What was the approximate price range you paid for a mail order chip?

How about an off the shelf chip?

Thanks Everybody

$250 for the SCT chip and I think $150 for the dyno tune. Had about another $50 or so in taxes too.

Not to side track the thread but what MAf are you guys running and how good was the tune you recieved with the chip if it was mail ordered? The reason Im asking is Im getting ready to drop in my new combo and i alreay have 30# injectors so I need to decide on a MAf, Ive also decided to go with a SCT chip I just dont know how Im going to approach this. thanks

Talk to Don at Lastoracing. He recommended the cheapest route, which was the 42lb. injectors and Lightning M/A meter. He said he would tune the chip accordingly.

I had planned on speaking with him but as you said he recommends the 42#s and I already have 30#s and dont want to spend more $ injectors, as I went overboard already on this. Well I guess i should speak with him first before I do anything anyway. thanks

I see you run a ganitelli w/ your set up. Is that MAF recald to the injectors or was that all taken care of w/ the chip? What it really boils down to for me is will I need a start up tune or will i be able to drive it to the dyno for a tune? Now if I go with a Ligthning MAf or SCt meter I will most definately need the start up tune. But if I go Pro-M then i can probably drive it to the dyno at least im hoping this would be possible. But is it the right way to go? Whats better for tuning purposes a recald metter or one like the lighting? Sorry gady for the sidetrack but it seems to me that the MAF is a key player in the tune and chip. any input would be great

No prob as you are looking for basic understanding here

I'll hit the high points
and
if you want all the details ... look on my site

A maf IS about airflow ... NOT ... about fuel inj size

When we mod our Stangs .........
Our need of more fuel (larger inj's) presents itself
way before
Our need of a meter that can report more airflow to the pcm

Where most get confused is ...........
the maf manufacturers devised that ....... "Cheat Method"
as a way for using larger inj's without a custom tune

Most just naturally think all meters are called for a certain
size inj

anyway .........

It worked Kinda Sorta OK with the Fox Stangs
but
Its a bit Sucky with our Stangs

Any method of tuning which gives access to the maf transfer and
inj size values in the pcm will be more accurate than that "Cheat Method"
which is based upon falsely reporting values to the pcm.

When one can understand this info here about .............
how the inj's and maf work together .............

You see your Stang in a whole different light
and
You see the differences between it and the older Fox Stangs

This maf/inj stuff took me a while to get my head around it
but
Since our cars are load based
and
the maf is used to determine that load

You wanna be as accurate as possible in this area

Clear as mud

I bought the MAF that was already set up for 24's......i drove mine for quite awhile before the tune..........it def. helped with a lot of the driveability issues......I bought the 24's first and then searched for a MAF..

Well Grady maybe you can help me with this one. My new set up consists of AFR 165s, FTI cam, TFS intake and the 30#s. The problem is im stuck w/ this C&L 76mm MAF that came on the car and ther is no way im going to use it with the new set up. So would you (A) get an 80mm Pro-m (B) lightining MAF (C) find a Stock MAF. Mind you, i will definately be getting it dynotuned and a chip burnt. Thats where the second problem comes in the dyno is a good hour from me so I would like to be able to drive it there without to much of a headach. Your imput is much appreciated

The stock maf is not an option for you here
You will be at or very close to its airflow limit with your combo.

At one time ... I did not care all that much for the C&L meters
however
More and more peeps have had good results with them
but
I do wanna point out ... these are peeps who custom tune them

You of course would wanna use the 30 tube if you try the C&L

You could use a Lightning maf
or
ProM 80 would be fine as well

If you go ProM 80 ... you would want to get it caled for 30's

In the ProM line ... I'd go with the 77 or 80 before the 75 bullet

As for the drive to the shop to get it tuned .....
I don't see how you would make it with a L meter & 30's

Does any of this help you

Grady

Grady thanks for the info. I was leaning towards the 80 Pro-m for the simple reason of getting the car to the dyno under its own power.
