Tune Up List???

My '98 GT is in dire need for a tune up. Aside form the regular oil changes, new air filter, MagnaFlow cat-back and new tires I put on it when I bought in May it is 100% as delivered from Ford. It has 64,000 miles and the brakes are due and spark plugs are due.

I making a list of parts and service to due soon. So far i have the following on my list...

brakes (new rotors and pads all around)
spark plugs
check air filter (replace if needed)
coolant flush
oil change (it's due again)

What else should I do?

fuel filter, plugs, rearend fluid change, new accessory belt, coolant flush, transmission fluid change or flush, tighten bolts on shifter(if manual), check brake fluid/power steering fluid levels, and clean the engine compartment.

Ahh yeah...good. Fuel filter will be changed and I'll check and change/fill (if needed) all those fluids.

Anything else?

What about PCV Valve? When is it due for a change?

they last a while but if you have the money it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy one along with an Idle Air Control valve...these two items seem to go bad without warning

What are the symtoms of a bad PCV valve when it does go bad?

I don't think anybody mentioned new wires. Check your rotor and cap while you're at it, make sure they're not fouled up or corroded. Anything else I can think of has already been mentioned.

The wires are a good idea. Never know when they will decided to burn through. As for the cap and rotor...98's don't have them. FYI.

Man I feel dumb... I completely forgot they're coil packs or something like that right? I'm sure there's SOMETHING you can do to them to tune them up. lol

I have those days too. Although there seem to be more of them lately. Does MSD or someone like that make a hotter coil pack for our cars? That would be a good tune up I think.

MSD does make a new coil pack for about $70 bucks a piece from Summitt.

follow your owners manual for schedule maintenance. you'll have to catch up by reading previous mileage services if you haven't serviced for a long time. if you get extreme cold, or drive in very dusty areas, follow severe service requirements.

I bought the car about 10,000 miles ago and I am about to do the brakes. It got me thiking about other things that are probably due or overdue since I don't have a service history to go by. If I go through it and do everything that should be done, I'll feel a lot better about it. Plus the winter is getting started and I'm driving this car through it this year. I need to be sure I'm as ready as I can be. My only cmoplaint is I don't have my studded snows this year like I have in every winter the past 6 or 7 years. Studded snows kick ass!


Thanks for the tips. I plan on looking through the maintenance book too.

the stock coil packs are fine...there is really no need for the MSD packs unless you plan on making ALOT of power in the future

somebody told me a while back to replace the coil packs at 100k miles...
