i have the option of picking up a 1984 thunderbird turbo coupe...its got 130,000 miles ....but its got a bad head gasket....is there anything that I have to be cautios of when buying a car with a bad head gasket...and what would be a fair price..thanks for the info

The problem I think in 85 (older 85's) and under 2.3T is that they didn't have hardned exhaust seats. From what I hear its RARE to find a 85 ( older) and under without a cracked head. Also the exhaust mainifolds are either cracked are about to crack. If it was me I would go real cheap on it like a few hundred bux.

Haha...fortunately there is nothing wrong with 99% of the cracked heads...matter of fact, I'm running 3 of them and don't have any plans to change them.

Exhaust manifolds are a minor issue...

Price depends on what you want (whole car or just drivetrain) and what kind of shape the car is in (if you plan to drive it).

500 or less would be great for the whole car if you just want the drivetrain...

Ya I been hearing that some of the cracks on these heads wasn't worth worring about and that is was the machine shops being to picky. Hell my 85 SVO ran great until the mainifold cracked.

That about what I payed for my 88'TC parts car.

I'm not sure on anything else on the older TCs you may want to check out NATO's web site since you want to put that bird on the street and not strip it.
