I have an automatic 4.6 and want to get a turbocharger for it. I want to know how it's going to sound though before I buy it. Since Im not shifting gears, will the blowoff valves chirp like they do in a stick? Does anyone have sound clips of a 4.6 stang, auto tranny, and turbo going through the gears? Will the blowoff valves even release air in the same way?

I can't get it up......ok that didn't sound right.

A blow off valve is a blow off vavle despite what transmission the vehicle has. Its going to sound the same way. Now, if you're wondering will it chirp gears at wide open throttle during gears shifts, I'de say probably so. I can chirp the crap out of mine and I'm n/a with bolt ons. I say talk to Jimfitzgerald. Although he doesnt have a turbo, he has a supercharged 4.6ltr auto GT. He can tell you more than I can.

I guess I didn't write my question right. I'll try to explain better. I heard a turbo mustang with a manual transmission yesterday. When he shifted into second, there was a big chirp (or whistle sound, or "Pssst") from the turbo. I was wondering, since Im not letting off the gas while switching gears (since i have an automatic), will it still make that same loud chirp? Im not talking about the chirp from the tires or gears, Im just talking about the short whistle burst coming from the turbo. I want the sound as loud as possible, because I want everyone to know I got a turbo under the hood Just wondering if with an auto it will be loud at all?

it should do that whenever you switch gears... however a blow off valve might cost you some power... diverter valve could be a better choice... although not so "fancy"

I didn't know there was a choice in valves... would you mind breifly explaining the difference between the two? I thought that a valve just released the pressurized air...

i am not 100% sure, but the diverter valve only takes the air and puts it back in the flow, while the blow off valve just lets it out...

it's a trade off and it depends on the boost you want to make...

i know that my friend with a turbo car will prefer the diverter valve over the blow off valve... however there might be some setups where a diverter valve is not possible... it all depends...

however to get the cool swoosh sound you need a blow off valve

If you have the pedal on constant acceleration, no there will not be a PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT sound coming out of the BOV.

The BOV only releases excess boost pressure.

AKA...

Throttle blade is closed while that moment you switch gears, the excess boost has to go somewhere, better vent it than reuining a nice turbocharger.

You can have both a BOV and BPV divert air back into circulation.

I personally just blow it in the atmosphere.

But all in all, as long as you keep your foot on the gas and and dont let go while "racing", you will not hear the BOV.
