how difficult would it be to turbocharge a carburated 5.0 302? I've been thinkin about trying to do it when I get some money. I wont intend on pushing a whole lot of boost, but just getting some extra kick wouldn't be half bad.. but either way, I'm still only thinking about it. I dont think I'd go for a very big turbo or anything, just something to give it a little extra kick. Also, how much boost does anyone think the stock components could handle, if any? I know this wouldnt be the best way to do it, but again, it's just a thought:P anyway, any info or opinions would be awesome. thanks!

Theres an old article in Muscle Mustangs & Fast fords about it. Some companys have made a "blow thru" box that goes totally around the carb. They said the only other thing to do was to raise the fuel pressure.

On a stock motor, 4psi (6 tops) is a really good mix. Not too much pressure, and it runs really good on pump gas too. and the power is not bad either.

Btw, this thread would do alot better in the "discussion" sub forum.

Jon,
Depends on how much $$$$ you have, Holley makes an awesome little baby blower that is a breeze to install and will make more ponies than a low boost turbo, with out all the pipeing. It just drops onto your intake manifold and carb goes on top. Wala!! 100 extra HP Course your hood will need a new scoop!

Plumbing will be an issue in the tight MII engine compartment. Usually you just get a pair of shorty headers and flip them around backwards then plumb them together with a "Y" and attach to your turbo. In the MII's case, you'll probably need to mount it low with shielding to protect the steering rack bellows.

Assuming that the shorties fit, you'll need to put the battery in the trunk (too hot even if there's clearance), and the electronic ignition in the fenderwell. There's probably no room for AC or the PS pump either. No problem! :nice:

This is actually a great idea for making cheap power. You'll need a special fuel pump with a boost reference on it so that the fuel pressure goes up as the boost rises. Use the Paxton 4bbl container and the carb that they recommend for their carburated supercharger kit and you're good to go. Choosing the correct size turbocharger would be the only real technical issue. You probably want a small one, so you might even be able to start with one out of the junkyard.
