I have a stock lx 5.0 convertible, 91, it just has 2 chamber flows and i had them dumped, a friend said they would be louder if i didn't have dumps just cut it right after the muffler. I was also wondering how much torque is lost with no tips on a pretty much stock car.

Well, your friend is right...the car would be a bit louder if your turndowns are pointed towards the ground, as the sound is going to hit the ground and bounce back up into the car and drown out. The cool thing to do is clamp the turndowns on so that you can turn them at 45 degree angles or straight towards the outside of the car.

As for torque loss when you lose your tailpipes, i personally think it's noticeable. The last time i dumped a car it just felt like it lost some seat of the pants feeling. That might just be me though. I've got a friend who actually picked up 2 tenths at the track just by dumping his exhaust....it might have been coincidence or just him driving better, but after he dumped, he stayed a consistant 2 tenths or so faster.

Oh yea...personally, i like tips. I like the car to be loud "outside" the car, not inside the car. With my setup, the car is still pretty loud inside but you can actually talk to someone without having to scream, and it still drowns out most of the cars i race.

The perfect setup would be to have some electric cutouts right after your mufflers and still have tailpipes run after those, so that you can just flip a switch and go from dumps to tail pipes. Then if you wanna get crazy and spend more cash, put another set right after the headers so you can run open headers. It's just a bit pricey since the cutouts are a couple hundred bucks a set.

Well I have turndowns facing the ground right now, he said if i cut them tho so there was no turndown just the back of the muffler facing the back of the car that it would be louder...

LX's need crome tips UNLESS,your cranking out 375hp or more, then dumped exhaust is cool.Losing your tail pipes and torque loss? You will lose more torque if you have straight thru muffs. If you have chambered muffs, its not that bad.You will lose more torque taking off the factory headers, and h-pipe.(on a stock motor)

The reason it'll be louder without dumps at all is because the sound won't be pointed towards the ground....basically the same thing i was saying about pointing the dumps towards the sides, only that would make things even louder, since the sound won't be pointed towards the back of the car.

This is just my opinion, but unless you need tire clearance...and LX without tails just doesn't look right.

I had my pipes cut at the mufflers and I hated it!! Loud as hell and I lost torque. I was glad when I got my cobra bumper and my LX pipes on.

on all my stangs i would always go with dumps and never felt no loss of torque but the fumes suck, the coupe im driving now has shorties, off road h with 2 chambers and tailpipes and it sounds loud but the dumps just sound meaner so every once in a while i feel tempted.

Nice looking notch jocko

I had my car dumped since the Dynomax SuperTurbos (crap) I put on were way quieter than I wanted. After dumping them they roared, could set off car alarms 7 cars down the line in a parking garage. Definitly set them at a 45* angle outwards though, the fumes can be pretty bad. Cant say I noticed a huge torque loss either, though the car was mostly stock.
