By far the most stupidest thing I have done to my car.

I had turndowns on my flowmasters but wanted to be a little louder and all, plus they were just ugly. They were put on by this muffler shop which just put some bent pipe on there for $40. They kinked down to like 2" in the bend. I never did like them so I got a pipe cutter and went at it. Loosened the catback bolts and angled the flows so they would be a hair lower than the axels. I started it up and it was much deeper, clearer and louder. I can't belive how much differenc a few inches of pipe made. It feels a little stonger, but we all know how SOTP HP is, decibles influince the butt dyno. I have done a few cold starts since then. It used to be hard to keep running when it was cold, now it just purrs strong. The car just seems to run much better.

Backround: I had tailpipes, but had to cut them off when I put on the 17x9" rear wheels. I had turndowns put on because people said if I didn't it would heat up my axels, bla, bla, bla, bs. I really put them on to be "legal". They quieted it down a lot. Well that was before I had LT's and o/r H pipe, so legal went off with the H pipe a while ago.

Wait it sounds better without the dumps now? I have them on my flows and I was also just keeping them on there b/c I heard I would heat up the axels too much if i didn't, so is that not true then?

It sounds alot deeper, louder and alot better. All the guys at my work were suprised. As far as heating the axel, first of all that is alot of metal to heat. Plus, the mufflers are about a foot from the axle, so there is so much air running under there it is so deluded. Plus, the mufflers are about a foot from the axle. I stuck my hand on there after driving it today and couldn't tell. I angled the flows so the are just slightly lower than the pipes. You can't even see the exaust from behind unless you get way down. Wide open flowmasters sounds mean. No extra exaust smell.

i had no dumps on my flows for about 2 years, just about 2 inch of pipe running from them in the rear, maybe less then that....never saw any axle issues.

i did that same thing with mine. it started because i couldnt get the tailpipes to fit, so i just left them off. i really did enjoy the noise but i thought that dumps would be the best in that they directed the noise downward to make them louder. well i had the old "pipe bend" put on there which i wasnt very pleased with and when i started the car it was way, way, quieter. had the dumps cut off the next day, axel problems blah blah. its been 1 1/2 years with no problems. the dude at the muf shop said it would break down the fluid, i just did the gear swap about a month ago and the fluid wasnt shaddy at all. have you ever felt a rear end after driving on the highway anyway, its hot... the only problem i could think of is the smell, but thats only if your sitting there warming it up or something, never at a stoplight

Loudest=No dumps or pipe; Next is Dumps, then full tail pipes. I don't know, my GT is plenty loud with full pipes. The LX isn't real loud, but it's good...actually need to get the back of the muffler welded ha ha, nice little hole there making it sound less-than-desirable....

no kidding i have the bent pipe turndowns. i hate them, my h-pipe hangs a little lower on one side than the other. so when you are behind the car it is noticable. i think i will cut mine off too. hope it does get a little louder.

Ok here's what you do. Go to Pepboys and buy a couple of those cheap chrome exhaust tips that are 45 degreeish that slip over the exhaust pipe, and clamp'em on. This way, they're removable, but here's the best part.....you can angle them outwards towards the sides of the car....talk about LOUD. With nothing at all, the sound has no direction but towards the back of the car, get the 'adjustible' turndowns and you'll be happy. The sound issue was more than likely from the 2 inch pipe and crappy bends. Also, if they're pointed directly at the ground it's going to mute the sound a lot.
