Tweeter question

I just added a 10 inch Infinity reference sub and a JBL amp to my mach 460, and it sounds great. It now has me wondering if swapping the front tweeters for some aftermarkets would clean up the highs that I want. I read on another mustang forum that the tweeters can be replaced with aftermarkets and it is just a plug and play but I would have to make a bracket to mount them in the 2.5" hole, which is no big deal. Can anyone verify that this is true?

You can do that, but I suggest changing the midrange also. The reason for this is the factory setup isn't a true mid/tweet. It is a midbass and a full-range/extended range driver. A common 5.25" component set will drop easily into the factory locations with an adapter plate, and a 6.5" will fit with a carefully cut spacer. The only thing you would need to make the tweeter bracket is some radio backstrap or plumbing strap. It's cheap and easy to work with.

Would it be possible to run a component system off of the factory amps or would I need to get a new head unit as well? I still do not completely understand the 460's abilities.

I don't know the full breakdown of the MACH, but I think most of it is the same as my Shaker. The fronts are 4-ohm and driven by the head unit. You can drive components this way. You will be happier with more power, but it'll work in a pinch.

It is the triforce. That is also tattooed on my right calf. I have one other video game tattoo, and several others I would like to have done. It is possibly the greatest game (s) of all time.

Dont run any new speakers off the factory amps, they have been adjusted internally to work with the factory mach speakers. You will need to get new amps. Also you will be amazed on how much better a component system sounds compared to the stock mach setup. If your looking for the best trash the mach.

I agree, the Mach 460 syst, is ok...but what a difference if you upgrade it all. It is possible at a decent price...especially if you are thinking about keeping the car for a long time it is well worth it. The Mach 460 is simply annoying to work with and I deem it useless as per adding aftermarket stuff. The wiring is a mess and the complications invlolved are stupid. I swapped everything out...imho.

True about the Mach...but dammit....I like the look of a stock system as in what a thief might see if he peeked into the car thru the window.

Just use the stock covers on the speakers. So he'll be able to tell you have an aftermarket head unit, but if your back seats are up and you use the stock speaker covers he won't be able to see the subs/amp in the trunk nor the upgraded speakers in the car...unless he's a friend of yours.

I have a full aftermarket system to include components in the front and coaxials in the rear, wow is the difference HUGE, you really can't even imagine until you have the chance to hop from a stock mach system to a nice aftermarket system. My system except for my Alpine Head Unit looks COMPLETELY stock, as i worried about this too. Especially having a vert, as the last thing I wanted to do was draw more attention to the car than it already gets. The stock mach amps are odd amperages and wattages and are designed to only work with the stock stuff, like a older post said, the components up front are really not true components. Sorta like a mix-breed component, mid-bass setup. I installed the Alpine's tweeters in the fatory pods, just remove the factory tweet and it'll fit right in there, (make sure to change any factory wiring as that crappy wiring is not intended for aftermarket amps that push a lot more wattage), sounds gorgeous but looks completely factory...perfect...

The factory wiring will handle a lot more wattage than you're giving credit. But, sometimes it's actually easier to run new wire.

Does anyone know what the crossover point of the stock 2.5" speakers are? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I did a little research on the Mach 460. It has three amps. Two for the 5X7 speakers and one in the dash for the 2.5" front and rear speakers. The crossover's are in the amps themselves, but I can't find the crossover points anywhere. I have a set of Infinity 1001t tweeters I'd like to put up front. They are rated at 2.5k-20k. I wonder if the 2.5" crossover point is below 2.5k, thus leaving a gap in the frequency in the front?

I read somewhere that the crossover point is 300hz. I can't remember which website it was on though. It will leave a huge gap in the frequency range and I know from experience. I replaced the front 2.5" speakers with tweeters with a 3k crossover and it sounded like crap. I removed all of the mach speakers and replaced them with infinity reference 6X8 components and rewired them using the wires for the 2.5" speakers since they are run directly off of the headunit because there isnt a crossover if you have an aftermarket headunit.

If you have to make a mount for the tweeters you can use fiber glass thats what i used in my fox. Might be easier in your case to run all new wires to all the speakers. So you know what is what and the amps will be taken out so you dont have to worry about them. Thats how i did it.

Mach speaks are 6 ohm .

if you are going with jbl's, might i suggest the jbl gtq, or gts series amps... they have been out of production for several years, but you can still find them on ebay. the reason i like them is they are highly underrated as far as power goes, and the distortion levels are among the best in the business. the gtq200 i have for my 6x9list 50 watts for 4 channels at 4 ohms, or 100 watts x 2, at .05% distortion, and they are built like a tank.
