How much does it typically cost to have a AOD rebuild by a decent shop? How much for a good rebuild kit and how many hours is this job? And, how much to drop something better than the stock AOD in there?

thats the same boat i am in. i got a qoute at $1300 to $1600 to rebuild with a new torque converter. to buy a solid aod your looking upwards of $1500. (without converter) a mustang shop near my house will install for $350. the price is the reason i am considering a c4 instead. just something to think about.

Yeah, that's what scared me from buying a nice 88 5.0 vert with AOD before. I was just hoping I had been wrong with my estimates. It would only cost me $500 to have a total pro rebuild the 727 auto tranny in my Mopar, and that's a much more bullet-proof unit than the AOD. I guess if I want a 5.0 I'll just have to look for a 5 speed, but they seem quite a bit harder to find.

What's the story with the C4?

sorry i dont mean to hyjack, i just had a question on the topic, but didnt want to start a newthread.

on the AOD, there are two cooling lines, one on top of the other, i just bought a trans cooler and i wanted to know which line(on the transmission)was the "hot oil" and which is the "Cool oil" line. thanks for anyone that can answer this.

I just had my AOD rebuilt with a bunch of parts I ordered and supplied to the trans shop. I spent about a 1000 on good parts and labor was 650 for the rebuild. They did a great job on it though. It lights up the tires going into second and barks them pretty good going into 3rd as well.

the problem with the c4 is it is only a 3 speed. no overdrive. one hell of a trans but i ruled it out because i need overdrive on my 88 gt vert. i use the highway all the time. it is a much cheaper and stronger trans then the aod.

Hmmm. How cheap? And what do you need to do to be able to drop one in?

mustanggt85,

boy, your havin no luck!

anyway, does not make a bit of difference on which is hot or cold...

as for quantity of fluid, 10-12 qts if it was totally empty. just a filter change, about 4-5... plus however much the cooler holds.

i put 12 in, and had to drain 2 after my overhual, thats with converter.

as for the rest of the thread........

the aod is quite a bit stronger than a c4, if you have seen them apart, and compare the geartrain, you would understand.

the weaknesses of the aod can be overcome with a few aftermarket parts.

a stone stock 5.0/aod should have a 2600-2800rpm converter, and with the usual bolt ons, i would go with a 2800-3200 stall. this will wake em right up..........and pass those pesky 5 speed conversion guys, make em jelous.

anyhoo, get a manual, get the video, and get a rebuild kit. you can have your aod rebuilt for 400 stock, or about 800 bulletproof, add about 400-600 for a decent converter, and smoke t-5 cars on a daily basis!

can someone explain the torque converter numbers to me. its the only thing i really dont understand. correct me if i'm wrong, but the converter #'s(2600 stall etc) is when you are moving and you floor the gas pedel, and the car hesitates for a second and (ussually)drops down a gear and speeds off?

meaning the stall # is the RPM the car will rev to before engaging(thus allowing more RPMS, and more power to the wheels) right? or wrong, or partially? please explain this to me.

i spent 1100 on mine for them to rebuild it remove, install, new torque converter, and a new battery. now it has like 5000 miles and is sitting on the floor doing nothing cause i have the 5 speed in.

1100 parts and labor for a solid tranny? I think I can stomach that. When it starts getting into 1500+ range I start getting worried. I'll probably hold out for a 5 speed but if I come across a really nice one with an auto I'd be tempted. The 5.0 I drove with a stock AOD felt horrible--engine seemed like it was really being handicapped by the stock slushbox.
