u/d pulley problem

I've had my pulleys for about 2 years now and my car started making a wierd vibrating/rattling noise so I took it to the shop. Turns out the waterpump pulley is vibrating on the waterpump and caused waterpump failure. I can't drive the car anymore because it will overheat.

The problem is, they need to find a stock 94gt waterpump pulley and no one has them.

Anyone know where I could find some stock pulleys (including alternator pulley) online?

Also, has anyone every had this problem before? Makes me really regret buying them, I didn't even notice that much of a power difference.
 
I have had more problems with my U/D pulleys than they are worth as well. Next chance I think I am going to take them off. They have already killed two batteries. I make full use of my 3 year battery warranties.

For pulleys I would try the Corral Classifieds. I always seem to be able to find anything there, especially when people are parting out their cars. www.corral.net
 
Thats why I kept my stock pulleys. I heard too many horror stories and didnt want to get rid of my stockers incase I wanted them back. Which I did a few weeks ago.

Check it out yourself once and see if it's worn from wobbling on the shaft. If that's the case, you just didn't tighten it down enought. If it wasn't balanced enough or was lopsided or something, you might have had a problem, in which case, don't buy pulley's off of ebay.
 
yeah pullies blow i had them for a year and went back to stock! I also dont see how a wobbling pully could cause that. Just maybe a belt failure. Just tighten it down. Also our water pumps are not hard to find. I have done mine like 3 times and any parts store always has them Kragen, Autozone, Pepboys, try summit too.
 
Yeah, I actually checked it over myself before taking it to them. Took off the belt, and made sure that they were bolted in tightly. I've had these pulleys for 2 years w/o any problems and I find it kind of suspicious that it has only been making this noise after I replaced my water pump (last July).

I don't know maybe the waterpump pulley got bent or something. Plus I want to get rid of these ****ers anyways, horrible alternator charging. It f'd up my windshield wipers.

What the prob really is .......... is this ...........
the bearing in the pump is on its last legs and that is allowing the shaft to wobble.

That of course will allow the pulley to rub against other things causing the noise.

Happened to me a while back :)

i've had my used march pulleys for about 4 years now. besides low battery voltage at idle, i love them. i can bump up the idle but i like it sounding lumpy. i noticed a big difference with them that i love.

if you just replaced your water pump last july, it was probably a faulty pump that caused it
 
Thanks for the advice Grady. I'll go to the shop tommorrow and ask them about it. I just talked to my dad and he said the mechanic told him that the waterpump pulley cause the waterpump to become misaligned. I don't even know if that's possible.

i've gotta set of stock 94-95 pulleys (crank,water pump,alt) i just put up for sale today on the corral. you can have them for $40 shipped if ya want them. i know i dont have many posts here, i usually post over on the corral or svtperformance. same screen name on all 3 sites.

Its possible that the pulleys were not installed correctly
and
that might have caused an issue like the misalignment you speak of here.

I'll do it now just so there is no misunderstanding.
When you do the pulley thing, the wp and hb run very close to each other.

I had eluded above to having some noise similar to yours
but
mine was my oem pos hb giving up the ghost thus causing interference.

As was pointed out earlier, a wollered-out (lil bit of Texas slang for ya :) ) wp would do exactly the same thing.

Hope that clears things up ...... just a little bit better ;)

I dare anyone here to goto the dragstrip and do pre and post test runs to prove that U/D pulleys are useless on a N/A motor.

For those of you who deem everday drivability to be the highest priority then maybe you shouldn't get 'em. :rolleyes:

I dealt with the charging problem by simply using the stock pulley on the alternator. No more charging issues.

I COMPLETELY agree. I've had my ASP aluminum underdrive pulleys now for over 6 years and NEVER had any issue. I paid ~$100 shipped for them from ASP and at the track I went from a 14.9 at 91.5mph to a 14.6 at 94.89 with no other changes. That is cold hard facts that prove their worth. Find another mod that cost $100 and gives you that much bang for the buck and I'll buy it. My car was my DD for at least 2yrs with these pulleys installed.

Whiotestallion, was your balancer ever replaced? Did you buy the pulleys new? The reason I ask is that I've known people to bend their waterpump pulley if it wasn't removed before the dampner was due to its larger size than the stocker.

As far as I know, I don't remember the balancer ever being replaced. I bought the pulleys new from 5.0resto back in 2004.

My main guess is that when the mechanics installed my waterpump, some misalignment issued occured with the pulley.

Grady, the car has been in the shop a month prior to this because they said the pump was vibrating on the hb. I got it back, and the noise stopped. Couple weeks later, it came back. Now they are suspecting that the allignment with the pulleys is the issue. They said they put a spacer on the wp pulley. I guess it worked for a couple weeks, but now the noise is back.

Whoa, wait a second here. I had the same experience. I thought the w/p pulley was contacting the hb. So, I put some spacers behind the w/p pulley. This fixed it for awhile until it started hitting again. I took off the w/p pulley and finally saw that the rubber from the stock hb was starting to come out and the outter ring of the hb was starting to come off. Now, if you were to let this kind of thing go on for too long I bet you could screw up the water pump. Just a thought but I bet your hb is going bad.

Are you sure it wasn't the HB vibrating on the WP pulley and not the other way around??? I'd bet money that it was. And as 95cobraguy said, the pulley sits flush on the WP snout. If they put a spacer on there perhaps IT and not the pulley caused the misalignment and ultimately you WP to fail.
