the low blows inadvertent? ehhh. the replay show him clearing hughes square in the jewels TWICE! i didnt see a foot deflect off a leg and hit hughes nuts. gsp wanted it more and hughes jus flat out looked bad.
There’s no denying that GSP caught him with a couple of low kicks, but it was clearly unintentional both times. If you’ll notice the first time he got kicked in the junk, he waited until GSP had backed off and McCarthy had turned back around to look at him before he preceded dropping like a cry baby to the ground. Some of the worst acting I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’m not sure which fight you were watching, but that second one caught him on the inside of the thigh, not square in the balls like the first one. If there was any contact at all with the second kick, it was by the tips of GSP’s toes, which would have easily been absorbed by his cup anyway. Matt Hughes plain and simple put on a show for the ref, the fans and the cameras. Not only for the sympathy vote, but also as a stall tactic in order for him to regroup himself since he was clearly getting the piss beaten out of him.

i remember gsp was the one that showed very lil class when he walked into the ring and said hughes wasnt impressive. thats jus low class. personally id like to see someone knock gsps block into the 10th row. the only time id ever wanna see that guy win is if he fought diego sanchez. that kid needs a beating like a somalian needs a sandwich.
Ahhhh, but you and every other fan out of the loop only got half the story on that one. A good friend of mine who fights for APEX out of Quebec trained with GSP a few weeks after the BJ Penn fight and got the real story on what that scene was all about.
In the aftermath of the Hughes/Penn fight, during Dana Whites post fight conversation with Hughes, GSP had gotten an important call on his cell phone and missed a good portion of what Hughes had said during his interview. Some of the guys in George’s crew thought they'd screw with him and told him that Matt Hughes was talking smack about him during his post fight speech. Immediately after saying this, George was called to the ring to comment on the fight and his buddies didn’t have the chance to tell him they were just playing around. GSP made those comments based on what he thought Hughes had said about him, to play it up for the fans. Immediately afterwards, Georges buddies let him in on their little joke and George went directly to Matt’s dressing room after the fight and apologized.
Regardless, of what the basis of his comments were. The main reason he made them was to shake things up for the fans in anticipation for their next fight. Not because he was a classless jerk.
As far as how this battle has played out. I feel as though Matt Hughes is now as he was then, severely outmatched! Regardless of his eventual victory at the end of their first fight, GSP took it to Matt Hughes right from the get go even then. It was dumb luck that he caught GSP with a submission the first time round, but anyone who saw that fight knows that that round easily belonged to GSP. Since then, George ensured it wouldn’t happen again by beefing up on his take down defense and ground game, knowing that he already excelled over Hughes during any sort of stand-up pairing. The end result…..TOTAL DOMNINATION over Hughes the second time around. Hughes is going to really have to get his head into the game if he expects to even be able to fight on par with GSP for their third meeting. It should be an interesting event none the less.
With regards to the other fights……I’m certainly glad they didn’t make the Silvia/Monson fight their main even. It was a total bore fest and Silvia’s a terrible champion.
The only other fight that night I was really looking forward to seeing was the Frank Mir/Brandon Vera match up. After seeing the fight, I find myself in total agreement with Vera when he stated that Frank Mir was nothing more than a “Flash in the pan” fighter. He came into his last fight against Dan Christison (from a losing bought with Marcio Cruz) looking like total garbage. He managed to barely eek out a decision victory against him, then comes into this fight not looking that much better. He was completely non-enthusiastic, no drive, no nothing. It’s like he’s totally lost whatever drive that he created after beating Tank Abbott a few years back and has just been coasting through his last few fights. Somebody needs to seriously sit him down and screw his head on strait if they expect him to renew his contract.
