doing conversion from I6 to 302 - put a V8 C4 in and linkage is about 2 1/2 inches short of hooking into tranny - i was told that a cable linkage is better - i don't understand how it works, much less how it is better....anyone done this beofre or can at least tell me what i need to know?

Are you talking about the kickdown link? IF so you can lengthen it. Just cut it off near the top, connect the 2 ends and measure the distance between the 2 cuts. then add a piece that long.
 
Only if the actual shifter linkage is also known as the kickdown - It's the rod that is attached to the shifter and shifts the transmission in and out of gear - just in case - it is an automatic if it matters :)
