So wile discussing with a friend today the boring out of his 4.6 to a 5.0 and the shop saying they could only bore out to a 295...not a 302 I did some math

1 liter = 61.0237441 cubic inches

295 / 61.0237441 = 4.83 cubic inches

302 = 5.0 (or so I always heard)

so 302 / 61.0237441 = 4.9488 ....so rounded its a 5.0...but not exactly? :shrug:

Most cars aren't exactly the size they advertise... A 305, like from GM, is an ACTUAL 5.0 if you really wanna split hairs. A 2j motor in a Supra advertises that it's a 3.0 inline 6. It's actually 2.9xxx liters. But who would advertise 2.9xxx when you can say 3.0? Or 4.9xxx when you can say 5.0?

I think another reason is that when Ford starting throwing the term 5.0 around, they chose that because they already had a 4.9L, the 300ci I6. It would probably confuse people to talk about a 4.9L 6 cylinder and a 4.9L V8. 4.9 and 5.0 are less confusing.
