I looked at a used gear yesterday. The guy said it had about 30,000 miles on it the ring gear looked good but I noticed on the pinion gear at the edge of the teeth it was chipped and in the middle of the teeth it was not smooth maybe pitted slightly. I did not buy it but would that be signs of a bad gear.
The guy wanted $50.00. If I knew that it would not cause problems I would get the gear.

good idea on not getting it. sounds like the gears were entirely too tight last time they were installed. for 50 bucks i would want a very nice clean set of gears. just save up a few extra bucks and buy a brand new set

Never get used gears, every car is different. The used gears probably have some kinda wear on them and if you put them in your car they will probably sqeak or vibrate or something, because every car has its own wear points. Anyone get what i'm saying! Hard to explain!

I get you! Even if the gears look perfect unless they are set up with the exact shims and tolerences (which there are hundreds of variables) they will not mesh the same and will make noise. Not worth it.

Used gears are OK ONLY IF you know the person you are getting them from. My 3.55's were used when I got them, BNut, I knew the guy very well that had them. I believe I'm furtunate that they don't make any noises and work very well.

It's not that they aren't worth it. Used gears are fine if you're ok with a little bit of noise (both my used gear sets made a little bit of noise, but nothing I'd carracterize as bothersome). I can't hear the noise at highwy speeds, but once in a while.

Those gears sound like they were setup incorrectly. But don't dismiss used gears all together.

Used 3:55's here too, over 75,000 miles ago. But they were inspected by a tech that knew what to look for. If they look funny, I'd be leary.

I've installed quite a few set of gears myself. From personal experience, I always like to ride in the car of the person who is selling the gears so I can hear for myself if they vibrate, make noise, etc. If there is no noise , I'll by them. My 4.10's have been in three different cars (installed myself) and have never had noise or vibration issues.I always intall a new crush collar, torque it to specs, and just use the same pinion gear and shim. If the gears are already taken off the car like you said, don't buy them.

Never non-roller cam. If it's roller cam, maybe depending on it's condition. I put a used B303 in my car, but it had less than 2500 miles on it. That's "used", but not in my book.

I was not sure what it was, I just remembered to watch out for used cams.
