used gears

Just wanted to get some thoughts. Used gears are about $75 and new for about $150. Any reasons I should get the new ones instead of a good used set.Thanks

Well ask what kind they are. Anything other than FMS tends to whine more. And just inspect them for any nicks, or imperfections. If they have any warping or dents or anything i wouldnt get them.

I have a set of brand new still in the box Ford Racing 3.73 gears for sale for $130. With warrenty!

I would always worry about something like used gears for the simple fact that the labor (eitehr cost or time) is too great for me to jeopardize the cost benefit of the parts themselves.

Since it costs on average $250-$400 for a professional gear insatll is the $75 really saving you anything?

I would call $75 saving something, wouldn't you????

But for the money difference, it's not worth it IMO. If the gears are FMS, and were installed properly, then it should be fine. check for poor wear too high/low in the ring gear, and too deep as well.

I bought a set of used gears and they work mint. Used gears might whine more then brand new gears just b/c they already have a set wear pattern that is diffrent from what your car might have but other then that as long as they are not damaged, cracked or knicked and if the price is right used gears are fine. Mine dont whine at all.

I think everyone pretty much nailed it on used gears...to me visual in the wear pattern is gonna tell you if their roached out....Odds are they're fine if low mile parts...I bought FRPP used 373s with 5K on them...they work fine...

if it's not a dd, 4.10... that's pretty much made my mind up for me

or you can get 3.90 and be in the middle.

or you could flip a coin

Sorry but whats dd. I was going to go with the 3.73's. I just got new tires,nothing fancy and it has stock suspension. Will the 4.10's kill the tires. Would i stick or just sit there and spin.

I have had no probs with used gears and have run many sets of them over the years.

It is important to say that they were known to be in good shape when I got them AND they were set up correctly when I installed them in my car. Worked great with no sounds of whine or clunk, lol.

Like peeps have said, if your not sure about their condition, it could be a costly mistake.

dd = daily driver.

Basically what I did to choose 3.73 is i picked a speed i drive on the highway then figurd out what RPM i could live with at that speed.

There are a few calcs out there to do this for you.

It is a dd and i drive on the highway everyday.what is your rpms at at 80

About 2600 rpm or so... so not too bad at all...

Like everyone said as long as they're in good shape, take em.

I got my 3.55's for free from a friend who blew up the spider gears in his f150. The ring and pinion were still in great shape though....I installed myself and all in all it only cost like $30 for the crush collar, seals and fluid.

That was about a year ago and they dont clunk or whine or have any other problems.

There are a few places that I would consider cutting corners to save a few bucks, but this is definitely not one of them. A professional install cost too much to bother with used gears. And you would put too much into an install too (if you did it yourself).

Buy new gears. And make em FRPP.
