Using a new style remote/key combo keyfob on a 99-04 Mustang

So I got bored and tried to see if my new Fusion's key can be recognized by my Mustang, and to my surprise it WORKS flawlessly!

I followed the standard programming method (turn key from ACC to RUN 8 times in rapid succession, not turning the key all the way back to the remove position, then press the lock button on the remote) and all the buttons work perfect. I'm assuming that the transponder is the same as well, it would be really cool to have one of these new keys for my 2000.

Does anyone have access to try and program a modern transponder key to a Mustang to verify that portion works as well?

What are the benefits besides that it looks a whole lot cooler and takes up a little less space?

I also like this. I'm tired of my busted remote. It's be nice to have something like that key.

if you have 2 keys already you can program it yourself

I kinda like that key. It takes up less space and looks cooler. I would rather carry that around my neck when i go jogging than a key and remote fob.

If i can get my hands on one, i will try programming it to work

EDIT: Holy crap, i found one on ebay for sale for $110. There goes that idea

You can use 1 old and 1 new fob if you want. you should be able to program up to 4 i believe. If you go to add the new fob(s) and only end up programing 1, after a certain amount of time it will be disabled. can't remember if its right away or not. make sure you take 2 fobs total.

Isn't there a PAL code chip in the key itself or something, that keeps the car from being started with just any spare? There is a little "hatch" on top of my key that if you open there is the chip that has to "mate" with the one in your car, or it won't start... I thought that was part of the stock security system..

I could be wrong, just what I remember.

Thats correct. But if you have two keys already made you can do the self programming feature and program the new key to start the car.

My question is does that key actually fit into the ignition of a Mustang??

If it does, then i would assume you could cut and program it??

Who wants to take a $100 gamble?

So it seems its completely possible. The downside is the blank keyfobs are $99 + shipping from Randy at MD..

Buy key

Have key cut to match factory key

Program transponder with the two factory keys method

Program keyless entry (verified to work)

If anyone can get the hookup on these keys, post up.. They're $140 list price.

You didn't get one of these? If not you can pick them up on ebay for about $20 shipped and you can program it yourself very easily.
