I picked up a turbo motor locally for peanuts. Low kms, missing the turbo, manifold cracked, and the ECU. Hence I got it for peanuts...

Can I use a IHI RHB5 or T25 -28 instead of the obiquitous T3? My goal here is to make boost at a more usable rpm range like 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm, and minimize the lag issue.

I will couple this with my rebuild A4LD, so should I snag the ECU from an auto TC to make things work properly?

Oh..does anyone have a good E6 with no cracks that they would like to part with??

Yes, you can use the IHI and it will spool up sooner, but most folks claim it runs out at about 4500 RPM. Have you thought about the T3 that was spec'd for the automatic cars? It's a .48 hot side with a .60 compressor. Spools up quicker than the .60/.63 that the 5 speed cars had. As for the T25 I think it may be too small, possibly as small as or smaller than the IHI.

E6's can be found every now and then on TurboFord, NATO, or Ebay. I've got a crack free E6 in the garage, but I haven't decided if I'm going to use it or not.

I honestly can't remember if there's anything A/T specific in the LB series ECUs over the LAs other than timing tables. There was a change in the electronic control of the A4LD but I don't think it was as early as '88 which would have been the end of turbo 4 production.

Most if not all of your questions can be answered definitively in the archives of Turboford.net. The search feature there can be invaluable at times.

Thanks for the heads up. I know the IHI was in use in some of the TC's. My target here is decent increased torque, running low psi on 89 octane. If possible.

Does the .48 really come on that much earlier? I'm new to SVOs, but from what everyone says I expected boost to start later than 2200 rpm with a .60/.63.

A .60 comes on roughly at 3000 rpm from my recollection. In OD(A4LD speaking) at 3000 rpm I'm already going 120+ kmh (70-75 mph). If boost comes on then, I'm already going very fast. I don't need speeding tickets that much...What I'm looking to obtain here is enhanced drivability. Low psi (like 9psi), increased torque at lower RPMs. I would be happy if the turbo came on at 2200 and petered out at 5000 as a daily driver I rarely bring it up to 5000 anyways.

Another question to throw out here is: what is the maximum duration (lift) I can use? I'd like to use my "b" grind as it gave me a nice increase in torque and a little more HP on top since it is a .422.

I could get full boost with the "larger" T3 at 2400 rpm in 4th gear. By full boost I mean 18psi. I can't imagine needing boost any earlier than that. Even if you could, having large boost pressures at low RPM's makes for insane cylinder pressures which require lots of octane, a perfect tune, and a prayer if you don't want to blow headgaskets...

Max lift without changing geometry (shimming, longer valves, etc.) is around .440"

I used to have a Chrysler Daytona Turbo - boost was on tap from 2000 rpm up - stock. So I'm looking for the same performance on this 2.3. I don't need extreme amounts of boost, 2-3 psi at that rpm - wilst 9-10 lbs when around 4000-4500. I really don't need extreme amounts of HP. Nice to know I can use my cam.

A stock T3 will make 5-6psi before 2k rpm so I don't see a problem...

Yes, a stock T3 is good, but I have ample access to IHI's and a TD04 from a Daytona - dirt cheap. The key thing here is that the a4ld will not handle major power - say over 160 hp is a recipe for failure...

If you can get an IHI from a TurboCoupe, go with that. They were on engines rated at more power than the previous .60/.63 engines, but are also smaller and faster spooling(although the .60/.63 is a more capable unit). That or retrofit one from a Subaru or something. I have one from a 1.8L Suby and it is probably 30% smaller than a .60/63. Its also capable of about 180hp max.
