I want to know if it is possible to use the mach460 head unit (w/ 6 disc changer) with aftermarket amps and speakers. I want the car to look at stock as possible, so I dont want to change the head unit out, plus I like the 6 disc in dash changer. Is there a harness somewhere I can buy to accomplish this? I know I will have to get high level input adapters, is there anything else?

thanks for the help!

technically it can be done. I am assuming your car is a 2000. you would have to grab the signal for your amps before the factory amp that is behind the radio since once the signal gets there it goes through crossovers which would make your system sound like crap. The 5x7 in the door and rear deck only play low frequencies and the 2 1/2 in the top of the door and rear play the rest. but if you grab the low level signal right out of the deck it should be a full range signal. you would have to not use a high-low converter. you would have to wire directly into those wires with RCAs. I have not tried this but it should work since your head unit doesn't have the seperate sub out like the 01 + units do.

If you are seriouly interest in doing this i could draw up the wireing for you. i should be able to pull all the wire colors at work.

If i am totally off someone correct me. i have done this in other cars that had factory amplified systems just never that year mustang.

one more thing: If you do this i would highly recommend getting a aftermarkt reverse harness to grab your leads since the factory wires are very small and would be hard to work worth, also if it doesn't work you can simply plug the factory wire back in and all is back to normall

Sounds like your on the right track to me, I have done similar things in my cars, it's just like you said, if you can look at a simplified wiring diagram for reference, and then draw your own, with the new components in place, possibly including smart remote turn on's, you can get really creative and have something that looks stock, but sounds high-end aftermarket. The only sound limitation w/ respect to clarity, might be the stock head unit. I do think that if executed properly, however, it will sound excellent!! :hail2: Also, using the reverse harness, as you indicated, is good advice!

yes there are two harness in the back of your head unit. one is the standard harness which leads to the four 2 1/2 inch speakers and the second harness runs to the amps for the 5x7 which basically are subs. You might be able to just grab signal from the main harness (metra 70-1771 and reverse 71-1771) you would have to check and see if it is a full range signal i am really not sure. If it is full range you are good to go if not you will have to grab signal from both.
