Well i was checking the valve clearence. I have hydraulic flat tappet cam. I installed my old head gaskets and torqued head down to 55 ft/lbs. then i turned engine over till exhaust pushrod on cylinder #5 was at top. then i adjusted the intake rocker so that there was drag on the pushrod. i then turned engine over by had 3 times. i removed head and the plasterceen. the indent from the intake valve to the other side of the plasterceen is like a 1/4 inch. does this seem like the right technique? what i worryu about is that maybe not full lift because hydraulic lifters not pumped up?

Perhaps. Did you prime them with fresh clean oil?

That's what I'd do. Get an oil oil pump shaft and a drill and go to town.
