Valve Spring Removal tricks please...

Hey guys, I am making a new thread since my problem has been narrowed down. I had no compression in cyl 4 and have now realized the the exhaust spring is broken. Now I just have to get it out and it doesn't seem to want to budge.

My neighbor and I put an air compressor in the sparkplug hole and turned it to TDC just in case. We used a spring compressor but the valve will not get off of the spring to "expose" the keeper. We tried pliers and banging it. We also tried the intake valve as well with no such luck either. We don't know what else to do because I'm doing what the Chilton's book says. Any ideas????????????

before putting a spring compressor on it I would normally give the thing a hit with a rubber mallet!! But the problem is that you need something "solid" on the bottom of the valve, try the old rope in the spark plug hole, bring it to TDC and try that.....

Well we did hit it with a hammer before we compressed (and after). Maybe the rope trick would work better. Thanks....anyone else?????

use the spring compressor and hit the top of the compressor with a mallet/hammer. if that doesnt work use a screw driver and a hammer to hit the spring retainer, sometimes it takes a few good hit to release it.

You have to hit them pretty hard sometimes to get the retainer to break free. With the cylinder pressurized with air, place an appropriate size socket over top of the valve retainer and hold it in place, then hit it a couple times with a hammer, just go easy
