1988 5.0 this block originally had a hydraulic flat tappet cam in it. I bought a new set of lifters for it and a comp cams 305h camshaft, after putting the cam in i dropped the new lifters in and they sit down in the lifter bores 1/4" at full lift the lifters are out of the lifter bore a maximum of 1/16" something just isn't working here. Any help would be appreciated.

An original 88' HO 5.0 is not hydraulic flat tappet.
The reason your lifters are sitting low in the bore... the bores are taller to accomodate the hydraulic roller lifters.

Just for ****s and giggles... does your lifter valley have two small threaded holes, one forward and one aft in the valley? If yes... those were to bolt down the spider assembly for the original roller lifters.

My bad.
That is a 302ci which is not an H.O. so that's why you didn't have rollers in there to begin with.
The lifter bores are designed to accept the roller lifters.

In all honesty, I suggest you return that camshaft and lifters and buy a roller camshaft and some Ford roller lifters.
By design, the "roller" setup will outperform the HFT setup.
You may also run almost any oil with a "roller" setup too.
