Variable Exhaust Note

well since you are such an ass let's look at things this way.... he wants a MUFFLER that is internally bypassed but still runs through the full exhaust system, your suggestion of using a cutout would in most cases mean that the exhaust would exit the cutout BEFORE the rest of the exhaust system, thereby actually being louder than if it ran through the exhaust system. all the bends and curves and even the tubing itself reduces the sound level as the exhaust passes through, which is not the case when using cutouts before the mufflers unless you run a seperate exhaust system out to the back of the car which is really stupid.

BTW, there is another option for a muffler with an internal bypass to change the sound level that is a good bit cheaper than the repro GTO system from Waldrons.

VaraFlow Tunable Muffler

First off...watch who you're calling an ass. If you can't have a sensible discussion without getting bent out of shape and/or resulting to name calling, don't post at all! :nono:

Second, I didn't suggest a cutout system at all. Quite the opposite actually. I merely clarified the term for a member that was misinformed on the definition. If you’ll re-read my posts, you’ll undeniably note that I suggested not bypassing the mufflers at all and think the sound of an un-muffled exhaust (whether its bypassed pre-muffler, pre-cat, or within the body of the muffler itself) sounds awful to start with....that was my personal opinion...not gospel! What's not opinion however, is that unless the engine is prepared to utilize this type of exhaust flow, its actually going to end up costing usable power and drivability. If a raspy, obnoxious exhaust note is more important to the original poster than retaining horsepower and torque, then by all means....forge on ahead, but its been noted just the same.

If some you guys are of a different opinion than myself, that’s fine, but this was a discussion about the sounds of a variable exhaust system. I posted my opinion on what I thought about it just like anyone else did or has the option to. You may not agree with it, but that’s no recourse to get bent out of shape because of it. If the original poster chooses to ignore my advice and move ahead with it, he’s more than welcome to. It’s his car and his prerogative. But when you post it in open forum for all to see, don’t be surprised if the opinions on the subject vary!

Thanks guys for all the input. I fully appreciate comments, even if they are negative. My goal is to have a muscle car with a throaty note that won't upset my neighbors or solicit tickets when I pull in at night. A cutout to ambient air would be loud and nasty I am sure.
I did some web searching and found the site for Waldron. It did mention that one had been installed in an early Mustang. It sounds like a possibility.
The Patriot VaraFlow sounds very interesting. The great thing about these forums is that, with all the people participating, you discover things you never would have come across.
I guess I am not too surprized, but everybody seems very cagy about the prices. Anybody have any information? Anybody ever used a Waldron or VaraFlow?
Thanks again,
