Vibration is still there!!! Please help me before I give up and sell the car!

Did the driveshaft balancing shop also inspect/refresh your ujoints? Did YOU check the ujoints? Did you pull the flywheel and have it resurfaced when you did the clutch job? Did the resurfacing shop check the flywheel balance?

Before you jump into anything involving pulling the tranny, I'd mark the driveshaft as it is now, and try rotating it (if the flange will allow - mine's different from the Stang) in 90 degree intervals - then test driving. See if there's an orientation that minimizes the vibration.

If it wasn't vibrating before the clutch job, I can't imagine how tires would've simply gone out of balance while you were working on the car. I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time/money in that arena.
 
Just thinking, too if they balanced the flywheel and also if the locating pin for the pressure plate was reinstalled. I'm still leaning towards that pilot bearing, though. When mine went it got bad pretty fast. Took out my input/mainshaft needle bearigs also. The pilot is what keeps the clutch plate centered.
 
When you install the trans to the bell housing using the 4 bolts, the diameter is a snug/tight fit.I had to wiggle it in and I got it started but to get it all the way in i used the bolts too. I have done this a few times and never had a problem. Just wondering what could be installed wrong? The input shaft slides thru the throw out bearing thru the splined fitting on the clutch and into the pilot bearing. there isnt anything that could misalighn here. I dont see how that could be his problem.
 
Well, made some good progress this weekend. I got the aluminum driveshaft in and the rolling vibration is gone!!! :banana::banana:

I am getting some humming around 75-80 mph though, is this normal with the aluminum driveshafts and 3.73 gears?


But, :bang: :bang: the standing still one (2000 - 2300 RPM) is still there and therefore, the tranny is going to come out. I too, believe that this problem is related to the clutch, or flywheel so I'm going to try and find a place to balance them. As long as I'm in there, I'm going to throw another pilot bearing at it.

No, the shop that resurfaced the flywheel didn't balance it and I'm not sure where to find a shop that balances flywheels... I'd really like to get the whole assembly balanced together.


So, plans are now to pull the trans, take out the clutch and flywheel and somehow find a place that can balance these together any suggestions or do I just need to find a machine shop that does balancing?

I would certainly hope that there's nothing wrong with the clutch or flywheel, but the vibration has to be coming from somewhere...

I know the clutch should be properly balanced and that the flywheel shouldn't be out of balance, but if you take metal off the flywheel, that can change the overall weight of the counterweight I'd think.

Depending on how much material was taken off I could personally see it affecting the balance overall.

And since everything else is fine, these are the only parts left that could cause a vibration specifically at 2000 RPM.

Even Spec offered to balance the clutch and flywheel assembly for me so I'd guess anything is possible.

Surfacing a flywheel involves removing just enough material to make the flywheel flat. It isn't the overall weight of the flywheel that makes it balenced. The amount of material removed is probably less than a gram or two (the weight of 1 or 2 paperclips). But this should not negitively effect the balence of the engine.

When it's resurfaced, the balence weight isn't (or shouldn't be) effected.

I recently bought a 95 Cobra and found it to pull to the right like crazy and had a bad shimmy over 55. I had it aligned and it was perfect. I swapped out a different set of tires/wheels and it was perfect. My conclusion is that I had a belt in a cheap tire that waas separating. I sold the wheels and tires and bought some from a friend that bought them from me a few years back. No problems since I changed the wheels/tires and no pull.


Oh, I have always had to draw in my tranny to the bell with bolts and it was only about 1/8" to pull. Did not hurt anything. It is just a air pocket or something in the pilot hole. Sometime they just slide in, sometimes they have to be drawn in slightly to mate.

Thanks for the idea, but I tried running it without the accessory belt on and the vibration at stand still is still there. I'm attributing it to a slightly out of balance flywheel / clutch combination. I've got nothing to do this winter anyways so I'm gonna pull the trans and get all that checked.

I may have missed it, but what about your balancer? Is it still stock? They have been known to actually come apart, but obviously not before they'd vibrate.

I believe that is what it has come down to, either an off balance Flywheel or off balance Clutch pressure Plate.

I have a Spec II. I emailed SPEC and they're more than happy to check the balance for me and if its found to be defective, they're going to replace it and pay freight. Good people to deal with. I just have to take the time to take it all apart now :bang:
