Vibration U Joint?

Off and on I get this horrible vibration from the rear end of my car. Last about 5-10 seconds each time. It's only when I go to spped up (Ihave an auto) and floor it then it just shakes real bad and sounds like i'm driving over rumble strips. I think it just might be tthe u joints any one have any input?

I don't think it's the (at least I hope not)balancer I just rebuilt and put a new motor in 3 mo ago. The block only had 35000 miles on it the car it's self has 93000 miles. But would the balancer cause the vibration in the rear?

usually when its the ballancer is the motor that shakes. Take a look at the ballancer and check if you can see anything sticking out of it or not. Also does your shifter shake when it vibrates? Mine did that when my U-Joints went bad.

Easy check. Jack up the car, put transmission in 1st gear, ebrake set, and turn the driveshaft back and forth & look for excess play. It should turn very slightly, but that is it.

Visually examine your u-joints. Have you seen a u-joint un-installed? It looks like a "plus sign" (i.e. +). At each end are cylindrical metal caps which are pressed into the driveshaft yoke. If it looks like one of the "arms" of the u-joint are broken, you need to replace it.

I had a real big vibration in the car when I would gas it and I went and had my back tires static balanced and it went away. Even at about 75 mph, it had the vibration. Check that first. Could be a cheap fix.

Cheaper test is to rotate them front to back.... if the vibration moves to the front... you know where to look. :nice:
