I've got a DV vidoe camera and I'm trying transfer the footage onto my computer. I've got the firewire cord hooked up to my camera and to the 1394 port on my computer. I can control the camera from the program so I know that the computer and program are detecting that the video camera is hooked up. Whenever I try to capture though nothing happens. I will press start capture and it will play the tape like it is capturing and when I press stop nothing happens. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong?

The program I am using is Pinnacle Studio Plus 9

Might be a setting in the program, dont know for sure as every program is different. Try using Windows Movie Maker, should already be on your computer. If you dont have it, just Google it - free download from Microsoft. Try capturing the video you want using this, works in pretty much the same way as you described for your program. Then once its captured, you can still open the file with Pinnacle and edit thru there.

I don't know your problem because I don't use Pinnacle but if you have access to 'friends with programs you could borrow', Sony Vegas 6 is what I use (probably is a newer one by now). It works excellent for me.

Play around with preferences, options, .... You may find a setting that is obviously wrong.

I tried using windows movie maker as well. it does the same thing it will say it is capturing then once it is finished it says it did not capture correctly verify that your camera is hooked up properly.

try using windows movie maker to import your video. If you have windows ME or XP you should probably have it. Its easy to import video using that program and it even has pretty good instructions. If you do it this way you can save the files to wherever and then use them in the program you are running. I wouldn't overlook windows movie maker though...I thought it sucked at first but it can really turn out some near professional quality stuff if you take your time and mess around with it a little bit. Hope this helps.

Nothing is being recorded. I just bought the wire, this is my first time using it. If the wire was messed up would I be able to control the camera from the program?

When you connect the camera:

1.) Does your computer recognize the camera?

2.) When you say you can "control the camera from your computer", what do you mean? Can you watch and listen to the video that is on your camera?

3.) What is the model of your camera?

Yea the computer recognizes the camera when I plug it in and turn it on. The first time it popped up and said new hardware has been found and now when I plug it in and turn it on it will pop up asking me if I want to edit video with pinnacle.

In the program it has options like play, stop, fast forward, etc. if I click on one of those on the program it will do that to the camera. Ex. If I press play on the program the camera will play the tape. I can't see the video in the program only on the camera but I can have the program play the tape in the camera.

Did you get software from the DV camera? You could be having visual dispay errors because too many video editing programs are installed into your pc

Awesome yea sounds like most of these people are having the same problem. Sounds like the only way to fix it is to buy a new firewird card Thanks for the link it definitely helped.
