i'm not having luck researching casting numbers. i have run searches and found that i should be able to identify a windsor visualy, but don't know how. i do remember the plugs on my stock 87 302 were on a slant. i've heard that the valve covers have differnt amounts of bolts? is this right? also can i bolt up a t5 to this? should i use a stock bell? thanks guys

both 302 and 351 blocks are windors.(not clevelands obvioously) They both use the same heads, as far as bolt pattern and valve covers go.

So does the clevland and the 400.

The valve covers form a flat top on a clevland. The valves are canted (not straight up and down). The block is heavier. The intake manifold water jackts go into the block and not into the head if I remember correctly. My 351 widsor either has a W or says windsor in the lifter valley.

I knew the heads were/are different, but wasnt so sure about the block. The easiet way i found is the lip right where the dizzy goes in. Really short on the 302 block. The 351 is a good inch or so taller. If you saw it, youd know what i meant. But i aint so great at painting pictures for you.

You know, I got this post all wrong. I though this was w vs c. The easiest way to tell a 351 from a 302 is this. Take a 8 inch extension and a socket. If you can get it straight on the lower waterneck bolt, it is a windsor. If you have to reach behind the WP and thus cant use the extension it is a 302.

The head bolt sizes are different but the pattern is the same. Windsor has 1/2 head bolts and 302 has 7/16. Think that is right.

Hopefully I don't do a typo here:

Casting Numbers, Ford Part Numbers, Bore, and Deck Heights

351W 1969-70: Casting: C9OE-B D1AZ-E, P/N: C9OZ-B, 4.00", 9.480"

351W 1971-74: Casting: D2AE-BA D1AZ-E, P/N: C9OZ-B, 4.00", 9.480" (9.503" In 1974)

351W 1971-74: Casting: D4AE-AA D1AZ-E, P/N: C9OZ-B, 4.00", 9.480" (9.503" In 1974)

351W 1975-78: Casting: D4AE-DA D1AZ-E, P/N: C9OZ-B, 4.00", 9.503"

Remember that there is a 351M as well, which is similar to a Cleveland.
The easiest way to tell a 351M or 351C from 351W is that the M/C has a cast-in-block timing chest with just a flat plate for a cover, while the Windsor has a cast front cover.
