if the vss sensor orange wire was grounded out completely would this affect the way the car runs?

Yes would be answer the majority of the time, but there are a few years/options that it won't matter....so needless to say need more info on car year, and do you have cruise control

Then yes, grounding one side of the VSS could cause issues.

It works on magnetic inductance...it's not a switch. Both sides need to find their way back to the computer.

Why is one side grounded?
