Does anybody know what the requirements are in WA as far as what emissions equipment is required to be on my car? It's an '87 ex-4cyl car. Now has a Victor Jr. headed carbed 351W (I ran it at Pacific yesterday for the first time). Will they check for stuff like a smog pump and EGR valve, or will me putting on a pair of catalytic converters and mufflers and leaning out the carb a bit be good enough to pass?

From what I know(very little), as long as you can pass the sniffer, that is all they care about. I found a loophole, so I don't have to worry about it anymore. Good luck

If your car is 15 or older theyt dont do it here in King County. My 87 CRX doesn't require one, which is a good thing, cause it wouldn't pass.

Are you saying that my '89 LX Mustang does not have to have a sniffer test? I live within Seattle, so are you referring to communities outside of Seattle but within King County?

Thanks!

Everything you need to know can be found here: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/cars/automotive_pages.htm

Does my vehicle need an emission test?
If your vehicle needs a test, your vehicle license renewal notice will say: "WA emission inspection required." Gasoline and diesel vehicles need a test every other year if they are:

Registered or will be registered in certain zip code areas of King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane, and Clark counties; and

Five to 24 years old.

The chart below shows which model-year vehicles need to be tested in 2005 through 2008.

Year
Vehicles requiring a test

2005
1981 - 1995, odd model-years only, and 1996s, 1998s, 2000s
2006
1982 - 1994, even model years and 1997s, 1999s, 2001s

2007
1983 - 1995, odd model years and 1996s, 1998s, 2000s, 2002s

2008 1984 - 1994, even model-years and 1997s, 1999s, 2001s, 2003s

Vehicles also need an emission test in the following situations:

When you transfer the ownership to a new owner, unless the transfer is between immediate family members or between co-owners.

When an out-of-state vehicle is brought into one of the emission test areas -- Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish, or Spokane Counties. We test those vehicles according to the year, as shown in the chart above.

For questions or comments about:

repairs to your vehicle

repair shop disputes

current status of repair shops/mechanics

waiver information

engine/emission non-stock issues

test procedures

test results

exhaust systems

fleet testing -- federal and local agencies

test tips

Please contact the Regional Office of the county you are inquiring about:

Clark and Pierce Counties: 1-800-453-4951 or
Southwest Region

King and Snohomish Counties: 425-649-7021 or
1-800-272-3780 or e-mail Northwest Region

Spokane County: 509-329-3491 or e-mail

I don't think that the emmissions guys are gonna be familiar with every car to be able to identify each different auto manufacturers emmssions equip, what years they were installed on, etc. they might do cat check. my friend passed emmissions because his exhaust had a ****load of holes in it.

The above mentioned loophole very much relies on the zip code list. Use your imagination, there are many ways around it.
