It appears I put 6 qts in. If I change the filter (FL1A), will that bring the level down to proper? Or I guess I just remove the plug and drain just a qt.

You didn't change the filter when you changed the oil?

I did change the filter. I was exploring the option of changing it again in order to get some of the oil out.

Either way, just pop the filter off and drain it, pop it back on.

Actually, the front drain plug might let out about a qt. I'll do that. I forgot there was two plugs.

I thought had done some of my better work while drinking. It might still be true. For instance, when I go back under to drain the extra qt, I might find a chafing wire, gas leak or a 5/16 bolt sticking out the inner side wall.

Reporting back on the 1qt overfill. I pulled the front pan plug and it gave me 1/2 qt. Re plug, run engine, drain down and pull plug for another 1/2 qt. Oil level correct now.

The dipstick is a bigger liar than most fishermen that I have met.

Drain both front & rear sumps, change the filter and add 4 quarts oil. Start the engine and let it idle 2 minutes or so. Shut it off, wait 2 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off and stick it back in. Pull it out again and take note of the oil level. I marked the dipstick with a scratch from a file at the 4 quart level.

Add the 5th quart, start the engine and let it idle 2 minutes or so. Shut it off, wait 2 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off and stick it back in. Pull it out again and take note of the oil level; it won't be anywhere near the factory full marks. I marked the dipstick with a scratch from a file at the 5 quart level, which is about 1" above the factory full mark.

When I went through the effort to drain out this suspected qt overfill, I caught it in a clean pan and poured it back in the bottle. You know the full synth stuff aint cheap so I was gonna use it eventually. But, after reading what you wrote here jrichker, I have dumped that qt back in. Next,(when I'm to that task on the list) I will follow your procedure and make new marks on the stick if warranted.

Thanks for chiming in. It turns out there was a good reason to start what could have been considered a silly topic.
